So who died?
Nobody. No member of the Landman cast has died. The viral story attached itself to Sam Elliott — who is alive, 81, and very much on your screen as Tommy's father, T.L. Norris, a role he joined in season 2 of the Taylor Sheridan hit.
Where the rumor came from
The death claim traces back to two YouTube channels, Ripples in Time and Celeb Breaking News — the latter essentially a factory for fake celebrity death videos built for clicks. The claim jumped from there to social media, and fact-checkers at Snopes stepped in to confirm Elliott was fine. His ongoing work made the case for them: the Landman role and his recurring Family Guy voice gig as Mayor Wild Wild West both continued long after the videos appeared.
It wasn't even the first round. A near-identical Elliott death rumor made the circuit back in 2019. He has now outlived himself twice.
Why the searches keep spiking
A few things keep muddying the water:
- Jon Hamm's character died — Jon Hamm didn't. Monty Miller, the M-Tex oil boss, suffered a heart attack and died after a failed transplant at the end of season 1. Hamm is fine; the only gravestone is Monty's, and it's a prop in West Texas.

Thornton put it bluntly:
