What Jack Ryan should you watch first? The viewing order that untangles five different Jack Ryans
Tom Clancy's CIA analyst has been played by five different actors across four decades, and the various films and shows mostly ignore each other. That makes "where do I start?" a genuinely fair question — and the answer is simpler than the mess suggests.
The short answer
Watch the movies in release order, starting with The Hunt for Red October (1990). There are four films-plus-one continuity in total, and only the first three connect to each other. The Amazon series is its own thing entirely — you can start there instead with zero homework.
The five Jack Ryans
- Alec Baldwin — The Hunt for Red October (1990). Ryan as a young analyst chasing a defecting Soviet sub captain (Sean Connery ).
- Harrison Ford — Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994). An older Ryan, loosely continuing the same continuity.
- Ben Affleck — The Sum of All Fears (2002). A full reboot with Ryan restarted as a rookie.
- Chris Pine — Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014). Another reboot, this time a post-9/11 origin story not based on any Clancy novel.
- John Krasinski — Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (2018–2023). Four seasons and 30 episodes on Prime Video, again starting from scratch.
Do any of them connect?
Only the first three films. James Earl Jones plays Admiral Greer across Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger, stitching the Baldwin and Ford eras into one loose timeline.
Everything after 1994 is a fresh start: Affleck's film, Pine's film, and Krasinski's series each reboot the character independently. And also it should be noted that Without Remorse (2021), the Michael B. Jordan film, isn't a Ryan story at all — it's a spinoff about John Clark from the same Clancy universe.
What if I want character chronology instead?
You can rough one out: Shadow Recruit (origin) → The Sum of All Fears (rookie) → The Hunt for Red October → Patriot Games → Clear and Present Danger. But since each entry casts a different-aged Ryan in a different decade with different backstory, it plays as five contradictory biographies rather than one life. Release order — or the series on its own — is the smoother ride.
Where should a total newcomer actually start?
If you love submarine thrillers and cold-war tension: Red October, still the best film of the bunch. If you want a modern action- drama binge: the Krasinski series, which needs no prior knowledge.
For the record: Baldwin was set to return for Patriot Games, but scheduling and contract disputes opened the door for Ford.
One casting change, and the franchise never stopped rebooting again.
