Four seasons, four very different reception curves, and a split between professional critics and the audience that gets wider every year the show ran. Here's what the numbers actually show.

There is a clean answer to this question and it depends entirely on who you ask. The two groups do not disagree slightly — they land on opposite ends of the same four-item list.

Prime Video ran Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan from August 31, 2018 to June 30, 2023: eight episodes each for seasons 1 through 3, six for the final season. John Krasinski played the analyst throughout.

The critics' answer is season 4

Season 4 holds a 94% Tomatometer, comfortably the highest score the series ever posted, with a consensus that reads: "Reporting in for one final mission, Jack Ryan's fourth season is tasked with delivering brainy thrills and ably gets the job done." Michael Peña's Domingo Chavez drew most of the individual praise.

Here is the full critical picture:

  • Season 1 (2018) — 75% Tomatometer from 85 reviews, Metascore 66.
  • Season 2 (2019) — 70% from 27 reviews, Metascore 56. The lowest-rated season by both measures.
  • Season 3 (2022) — 82% from 22 reviews, Metascore 73.
  • Season 4 (2023) — 94% from 16 reviews, Metascore 73.

Note the sample sizes. Season 1 was graded by 85 critics; season 4 by 16. By the final stretch, the people still filing reviews were people who had stayed with the show for five years, which is not the same population that reviewed the pilot.

The audience answer is season 1

IMDb user ratings run in almost exactly the reverse order: season 1 at 8.2, season 3 at 7.8, season 2 at 7.6, season 4 at 7.5. Rotten Tomatoes' audience score tells the same story from the other direction — 88% for season 1 against 68% for season 4.

Critics ranked season 4 first and season 2 last. Viewers ranked season 1 first and season 4 last. The only thing both groups agree on is that season 3 sits in the middle.

Why the split happened

The two seasons at the extremes are doing different jobs. Season 1 is an origin: Ryan at a desk, following financial transactions into a terrorist network, with the show still framing him as an analyst who is out of his depth in the field. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus called it a satisfying genre entry "buoyed by exceptional action sequences and a likable cast."

Season 4 is a wrap-up. Six episodes, a compressed conspiracy, a cast of established supporting players, and a lead who has long since stopped being an analyst out of his depth.

The season 2 consensus, from critics, is the most useful line in the whole set: the show became "both more refined and more predictable," trading Ryan's moral complexity for a straightforward spy series.

That trade is the whole argument. Critics rewarded the polish. Viewers were rating the thing they'd signed up for in 2018.

For the record: if you want the season that both camps put above average, it's season 3 — 82% critics, 75% audience, 7.8 on IMDb, and the only one neither group ranks last.
