What happens to Sheepstealer in House of the Dragon? The three-on-one fight, and the Nettles clue book fans caught
Season 2 ended with Rhaena Targaryen chasing a rumor of a wild dragon through the Vale. Season 3 delivered the dragon, a battle, a cave, and — by episode 7 — a three-on-one aerial fight that ended the whole arrangement.

Rhaena claims him — then loses him
In the season 3 premiere (June 2026 ), Rhaena finally mounts Sheepstealer, and the wild dragon accepts her enough to hunt and roast a meal on her behalf. It doesn't hold. She flies him straight into the Battle of the Gullet, loses control mid-fight, and Sheepstealer burns Velaryon ships — chaos that contributes to the death of her stepbrother Jacaerys. Rhaena spends the following episodes hiding with the dragon in a cave in the Vale, looking less like a princess every week.
The three-on-one fight
In episode 7, "The Dragon in Winter" (August 2, 2026), the hideout stops being one. Daemon finds the pair first, and then two more riders arrive, leaving Sheepstealer cornered by three dragons at once:
- Caraxes — Daemon, ostensibly there to help his daughter.
- Syrax — Rhaenyra, there to end the embarrassment.
- Seasmoke — Addam of Hull, backing his queen.
A short, ugly dragon fight follows. Rhaena is captured and hauled back to the Red Keep as Rhaenyra's prisoner. Sheepstealer gets away — and, notably, nobody finishes him off despite three clear chances. That reads like a dragon the show intends to use again.
The Nettles clue book fans caught
Earlier in the same episode, Daemon visits Jeyne Arryn demanding to know where Rhaena is. Jeyne mentions gossip about a wild girl living in the mountains among sheep and "nettles." She means the plant. The writers mean the wink. In Fire & Blood, Sheepstealer's rider is Nettles, a 16-year-old dragonseed who tamed him by leaving a freshly killed sheep out every morning — a fan-favorite character the show cut entirely and handed, in modified form, to Rhaena.
Why Nettles was cut
Showrunner Ryan Condal has addressed it directly:
"It felt more apt as this is a family story," Condal told IGN in 2026, noting Rhaena had spent two seasons established as the one Targaryen without a dragon.
He also told IGN the writers didn't want to touch the book's implied Daemon infidelity subplot, given where he and Rhaenyra stand.
What the book says happens to Sheepstealer
Fire & Blood never kills him. Years into Aegon III's reign, soldiers under Robert Rowan stumble onto Nettles and Sheepstealer in a mountain cave; over a dozen men die, and the pair fly deeper into the Mountains of the Moon, never recorded again. The book doesn't write Sheepstealer a death. It just stops writing about him — which, for a wild dragon in this story, is about the best available outcome.
