Captain Oscar Finlay — the tweed-wearing, Harvard-educated chief detective played by Malcolm Goodwin — was one of the breakout characters of Reacher season 1, appearing in all eight episodes of the Margrave story in 2022. Then the show did what Reacher always does: moved on to a new town and a new cast.

But Finlay's story didn't stop at the Georgia state line.

Where season 1 left him

Finlay survives the Margrave conspiracy — including being taken hostage in the finale — and tells Reacher he's moving back home to Boston, hinting he might be done with police work altogether. He'd already served 20 years with the Boston PD before Margrave, and he leaves town with one addition to his life: the stray dog from the case, which he adopts and names Jack. After the man, obviously.

The season 2 return

Margrave wasn't goodbye. In season 2, episode 4, "A Night at the Symphony" (December 2023), Reacher's 110th Special Investigations Unit swings through Boston and calls on Finlay to help squeeze information out of a senator's aide. The catch-up is quick but complete:

  • The retirement didn't take — Finlay rejoined the Boston Police Department.
  • He got promoted — he's now a lieutenant working as a detective.
  • Jack the dog is thriving — still with him, still named Jack.
  • The tweed survived too — some things don't change.

The cameo was a genuine surprise even on set. Alan Ritchson told TVLine how he reacted to the script:

"I screamed, too, when I saw his name in the script. I couldn't wait to have him back."

Why he wasn't in season 3

Simple: he wasn't written in. Goodwin confirmed to Collider at the Saturn Awards that he wouldn't appear in season 3, which premiered February 20, 2025 and adapted Persuader — a story set in New England with no natural Finlay role. Notably, his season 2 appearance wasn't in the source book either; the writers invented it because the story happened to pass through Boston.

Could he come back?

The door is wide open. Goodwin has repeatedly said he'd return, and the franchise is expanding fast — season 4 hits Prime Video on August 12, 2026, adapting Gone Tomorrow in New York City, followed by the Neagley spin-off on September 16. No Finlay appearance has been announced for either. But this is a character who already came back once when the road ran through his city.

New York is four hours from Boston. Just saying.
