What happened to Upton on Chicago PD? Her final case nearly killed Voight
Detective Hailey Upton spent seven and a half years in the Intelligence Unit — from Tracy Spiridakos' first appearance in season 4 back in 2017 to the season 11 finale on May 22, 2024. Her last episode, fittingly titled "More," gave her one of the most brutal cases the show has ever aired.
Here's exactly how it ended, and why Spiridakos walked away.
The short answer
Upton is alive. In the season 11 finale, she quit the Intelligence Unit to start over, researched jobs with the FBI, FEMA, and the DEA, and rode a taxi toward O'Hare — destination never revealed. Spiridakos chose to leave the show, and the writers gave her an open-ended, hopeful exit.
The case that nearly killed Voight
The finale put Upton in charge of Intelligence as they raced to find Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), who'd been drugged and abducted by serial killer Frank Matson. Upton ended up in Matson's clutches herself, fighting to keep both of them alive before the takedown. Voight barely survived — and while he was drugged, the episode slipped in a surprise cameo from Elias Koteas as the late Alvin Olinsky, appearing in Voight's visions.
Afterward, a battered Upton opened up to Voight in the hospital, telling him she just wanted to feel better and be better. He gave her his blessing to go. That conversation was her real goodbye.
Why Tracy Spiridakos left
Her call, entirely. Spiridakos told Variety ahead of the finale that she'd approached showrunner Gwen Sigan and Dick Wolf near the end of her sixth season, asking to do one more year so the character could get a proper sendoff — and calling the decision "very, very hard." She'd stayed through a lot: Jesse Lee Soffer's Jay Halstead abandoned Upton in season 10, and their divorce was finalized early in season 11.
She had no complaints about how it wrapped:
"It's this really happy send-off for her and I absolutely love it," Spiridakos told Deadline in May 2024.
Could Upton come back?
The door is wide open — by design. Showrunner Gwen Sigan told TVLine the ambiguous ending was built for "hope and possibility," and the job brochures were a deliberate tease:
- The FBI — the same road Sophia Bush's Erin Lindsay took in the season 4 finale.
- FEMA — the wild-card option nobody saw coming.
- The DEA — the one closest to her old skill set.
Which one she picked has never been answered on screen. When the cab driver asked where she was headed, Upton just smiled. Cut to black.
