Randall Kirkland's death is the mystery that powers Netflix's Ransom Canyon from its opening minutes. Here's the complete account of what happened to Staten's son, how the truth surfaced, who paid for it, and what season 2 does with the aftermath.

Netflix 's Ransom Canyon opens on a birthday party and gets to a funeral with remarkable speed. Within the first few minutes of the April 17, 2025 premiere, Staten Kirkland's teenage son Randall is dead, and the question of exactly how becomes the engine of the entire first season. With season 2 out as of July 2026, here's the full account.

The crash

Randall (Hubert Smielecki) storms out of his own birthday party after a fight with his father (Josh Duhamel) and drives off in the sports car his uncle, Davis Collins (Eoin Macken), gave him as a gift. On a dark road outside town, his car flips, and he dies of his injuries. Police rule it a single-vehicle accident and close the file.

Staten — who buried his wife Amala not long before — never accepts the ruling. A year later, he's still insisting there was a second vehicle on that road. The town writes it off as grief. He's right anyway.

"It has been a dark couple of years for this dude. It really has," Duhamel told Entertainment Weekly in 2025.

Who was actually driving

Episode 5 hands viewers the name; the finale supplies the circumstances. Margaret Brigman (Sarah Minnich), the estranged, alcoholic wife of Sheriff Dan Brigman (Philip Winchester), was drunk at the wheel of a blue Ford pickup that night, heading home from an evening with her lover. Her swerving forced Randall off the road, and she kept driving.

The lover, in classic small-town fashion, was Kit Russell (Casey W. Johnson) — the local outcast, Lucas's older brother, and the first man police arrested for the crash.

The cover-up

The truck didn't disappear on its own. Piece by piece:

  • Kit — tried to take the blame himself to shield Margaret.
  • Reid and Nick — owed Kit a favor, scraped the VIN off the pickup, and sank it in a nearby lake.
  • Lucas — found the submerged truck while swimming with Lauren, which reopened the case.
  • Lauren — overheard the truth about her mother and insisted her father make the arrest.

The season ends with Sheriff Brigman knocking on his own wife's door and taking her in on manslaughter charges. Showrunner April Blair told TVLine in April 2025 that "that mystery has been put to bed" — the writers wanted Staten to finally get room to grow.

Where season 2 takes it

Season 2, released in July 2026, deals in consequences rather than reopened files. Margaret is in prison. Lauren, her cheerleading scholarship gone after an injury, drifts toward the worst possible person — Kit. And Staten gets to be something other than the grieving father: in the season 2 finale, back together with Quinn, he closes the book himself.

"Amalah and Randall, I don't regret a single moment of my life with them," he tells her.

For the record: Blair's writers had this aftermath mapped before Netflix even ordered season 2 — the room was already at work when the renewal came through.
