What happened to Randall in Ransom Canyon? His death is the lie half the town helped bury
Ransom Canyon opens with a gut punch. Within the first minutes of the Netflix drama's premiere on 17 April 2025, Staten Kirkland's teenage son Randall (Hubert Smielecki) storms off after his birthday party, flips his car on a dark Texas road, and dies.
The police call it a single-car accident. Staten (Josh Duhamel) never believes it — and season 1 proves him right.
What really happened that night
A year after the crash, Staten finds truck debris at the site, confirming his suspicion that another vehicle forced Randall off the road. The truth, uncovered piece by piece across the season: Margaret Brigman (Sarah Minnich) — the sheriff's wife and Lauren's mother — was drunk behind the wheel of the truck that ran Randall off the road. The car he crashed had been a gift from his uncle Davis.
One driver. But it took a small conspiracy to hide her.
Who helped bury it
- Kit Russell — Margaret's secret lover, who orchestrated the cover-up to protect her and later took the blame himself when arrested.
- Reid and Nick — called in by Kit to scrape the VIN off the truck and dump it in a nearby lake, where Lucas later found it while swimming with Lauren.
- Sheriff Dan Brigman — who, on learning his own wife was responsible, seriously considered burying the truth too. Margaret had left town, got sober, and begged him not to undo it.
What tipped the scales was Lauren. When she overheard the truth about her mother, she insisted on justice — and in the season 1 finale, Sheriff Brigman arrested his own wife on manslaughter charges.
Why the show solved it so quickly
Showrunner April Blair told TVLine in April 2025 that the writers deliberately closed the mystery in one season rather than stretching it out:
"You never move on from the loss of a child," Blair said — but the team wanted Staten to start letting go of that ghost.
Where season 2 picks up
Season 2, which landed on Netflix in July 2026, deals directly with the fallout. Lauren is reeling from her mother's arrest, off the cheerleading team after an injury, and watching her scholarship hopes fade. And Kit hasn't finished weaponising the secret — he pitches himself to Staten's father Sam as a man who already proved his loyalty by helping cover up Randall's death.
