What happened to Kaylee Hottle? Remembering the Godzilla vs Kong star
Kaylee Hottle was the young Deaf actress whose performance as Jia gave the MonsterVerse its heart. On 21 July 2026, she died following a car crash in Maryland. She was 18. Here's what happened.
What happened
Shortly before 3am on Tuesday 21 July 2026, a 1995 Honda Accord carrying three people left Windsor Road in Ijamsville, Maryland, and struck a culvert. Hottle, a passenger, was taken to a trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead — the only fatality. The driver, a 19-year-old man from Frederick, survived with non-life-threatening injuries; the other passenger declined treatment at the scene.
The Frederick County Sheriff's Office said excessive speed is believed to have been a contributing factor, and the Maryland medical examiner ruled her death accidental, caused by multiple blunt force injuries.
Her father, Joshua Hottle, shared the news in an emotional ASL livestream, explaining he'd flown from Texas to bring his daughter home.
Who she was
Born in Atlanta in 2007 into a family with four generations of Deaf relatives on her father's side, Hottle was a native signer of American Sign Language.
She started young — a widely seen PSA for the messaging app Glide at age 9, then a 2017 advert for the ASL service Convo that led casting director Sarah Halley Finn straight to her for Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). It was her feature debut, and co-stars Rebecca Hall and Alexander Skarsgård learnt ASL so they could talk with her between takes.
She returned as Jia — Kong's translator, confidante, and conscience — in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), earning a Saturn Award nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor. In between, she appeared in a season 4 episode of Magnum P.I. She studied at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin.
The tributes
Her Godzilla family responded within hours. Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Eiza González all posted tributes, and Legendary Pictures praised the heart and humanity she brought to the franchise.
"You will be deeply missed Kaylee," Millie Bobby Brown wrote on Instagram in July 2026.
What about Jia?
Hottle was not among the announced cast of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, the next MonsterVerse film, due in March 2027 and in production at the time of her death. At The New Empire's 2024 premiere, she'd spoken about hoping Jia would go on to help her people, the Iwi tribe — a story that will now belong to the fans who loved her in it.
