What happened to Harper in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place?
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place ran two full seasons without Alex Russo's best friend — no Harper Finkle, and barely a mention of her. The show's four-part finale event, which streamed on Disney+ in summer 2026, finally brought her back.
It just picked a strange place to do it.
Why Harper wasn't in the show
The reason is entirely off-screen: Jennifer Stone mostly stopped acting. After the original Wizards of Waverly Place ended in 2012, she went to nursing school and became a registered ER nurse in Burbank, California — the finale marks her first credited on-screen role since 2019. When the sequel series launched in 2024, co-star and executive producer David Henrie floated the idea of a future guest spot, and Stone assumed that was that.
"I was pleasantly surprised when I got the call to come back," Stone told Deadline in 2026.
She's said she'd mentally retired the character years ago and considered Harper a resident of the original show only.
Where Harper turns up
Season 2 ended with Alex (Selena Gomez) — freshly revealed as Billie's mother — shoving Lord Morsus through a dimensional rift and disappearing into it herself. The final season reveals where she landed: an alternate-universe limbo built from a comfortable might-have-been life. In it, Alex still lives with Harper and is still dating Mason Greyback (Gregg Sulkin), and Harper is giddily failing to hide that Mason is about to propose. The reunion happens in episode 2 of the four-part conclusion — brief, dreamlike, and the only Harper content in the entire sequel series.
The comeback by the numbers
- 106 episodes and two films — Stone's full run as Harper on the original series, 2007 to 2012.
- Nearly 15 years — the gap between putting the character away and picking her back up.
- One episode — the total size of the return.
- One abandoned pitch — producers once considered a spin-off about Alex and Harper sharing an apartment. It never happened.
Is that the end?
Yes — season 3 was the series' last, a four-episode farewell subtitled "One Last Spell." Gomez, Sulkin, Stone, and Maria Canals-Barrera all returned for it; Jake T. Austin's Max ended up the only original regular who never appeared, though the premiere established he turned the family sub shop into a billion-dollar franchise. Stone, for her part, told Parade that working with Gomez again felt "like no time had passed."
Then she presumably went back to the ER, where the magic is regulated by the FDA.
