What happened to Corlys Velaryon? The Sea Snake's season keeps ending on cliffhangers
If there's one thing House of the Dragon likes doing to Steve Toussaint's Corlys Velaryon, it's rolling credits over his unconscious body. Season 3 has now done a version of this twice — and as of episode 7, we finally know where he is.
Where Corlys is right now
Alive, captive, and down one finger. Episode 6 ended mid-ambush: just as Corlys agreed to march his host back to King's Landing at Rhaenyra's request, Ser Jon Roxton — a knight loyal to Lord Ormund Hightower — attacked the Velaryon column, got a garrote around the old man's neck, and the episode cut to black.
Episode 7 (August 2, 2026 ) resolved it: Corlys is Ormund Hightower's prisoner at Tumbleton, held in comfort and treated with a certain professional respect.
The comfort has limits. Ormund's play isn't ransom — it's leverage. He cuts off Corlys' ring finger and sends it, ring still attached, to Alyn of Hull in King's Landing, betting that Velaryon swords stay home while their lord's remaining fingers are negotiable.
The pattern
- Season 1 — an infected wound from the Stepstones campaign leaves him feverish and absent, fate unresolved for episodes at a stretch.
- Season 2 — he survives, loses his wife Rhaenys at Rook's Rest, becomes Rhaenyra's Hand, and quietly acknowledges his bastard sons Alyn and Addam.
- Season 3 — he takes heavy losses at the Battle of the Gullet, survives another close call earlier in the season, then gets ambushed in episode 6 and mutilated in episode 7.
Three seasons. Three separate rounds of "is Corlys dead."
What the book says
Fire & Blood tells a completely different story. Book-Corlys never leaves King's Landing during this stretch — instead, Rhaenyra imprisons him on suspicion of treason, which prompts his sailors to desert her cause. He's later freed, helps broker the war's end, bends the knee to Aegon II, and then serves as regent for young Aegon III before dying of natural causes in 132 AC. In a story where nearly every major player is poisoned, burned, or eaten, Corlys dies of being old. The show has rerouted his path substantially, but there's no sign yet that it's changed his destination.
