What happened to Brandon on The Chi?

He died off-screen, between seasons, with all the narrative ceremony of a parking ticket. One minute he's in the season 2 finale plotting against Douda, chef dreams intact, redemption arc loading — the next, his own funeral opens season 3 and his mother Laverne is delivering a eulogy while the audience collectively googles "did I skip an episode."

You did not skip an episode. The show skipped it for you.

The off-screen part was not a creative choice

Here's the behind-the-scenes of it: Jason Mitchell, the actor who played Brandon, was fired in May 2019 following misconduct allegations, including complaints from co-star Tiffany Boone, who played Brandon's girlfriend Jerrika and who left the show herself after season 2. Season 2 was already finished when the firing happened, which meant the writers had exactly zero footage to work with and one very large hole where their lead used to be.

Showtime didn't exactly agonize in public over what to do next. Asked at a press tour how the show would handle it, then-entertainment chief Gary Levine told reporters that, among the great life in The Chi, "there's also death in The Chi" — and when a reporter followed up with "so he'll be killed off?", Levine nodded. A nod! For the lead of the show! Television is a brutal industry and sometimes it doesn't even use words.

Mitchell, for his part, disputed the allegations and claimed money disputes played a role in his exit.

So who killed Brandon (in the show)?

For a whole season: nobody knew, and the show wasn't telling. Then season 4 did the thing:

• which is the closest the series has come to confirming Douda had Brandon killed, presumably because Brandon was preparing to help take him down;
• an actual on-screen death scene, murder weapon, or explanation? Still no. The Chi keeps its secrets like a Victorian widow.

Brandon didn't get a death episode. He got a eulogy, a mystery, and a season-and-a-half delay on the word "why."
