Veronica Roth is diving back into Divergent with a two-book companion timeline unveiled at BookCon, a duology that rewrites fate by asking what happens if Tris never transfers.

Veronica Roth is cracking open the Divergent world again, but not with a straight sequel. Think alternate track: same universe, same starting line, different lane. And yes, this could get interesting.

What Roth just announced

At BookCon on Saturday, April 18, the 37-year-old author revealed a new two-book Divergent project that runs alongside the original timeline and plays out a giant what-if: what if Tris never jumped to Dauntless in the first place?

'The Sixth Faction started as an experiment - not a sequel, not a prequel, and not a spinoff, but something new, something that would allow me to explore the series that launched my career.'

  • Format: a duology set in a companion timeline to Divergent, built around the question 'What if Tris hadn’t transferred to Dauntless?'
  • Book 1: The Sixth Faction, out October 6.
  • Premise: We rewind to Beatrice Prior at the Choosing Ceremony, already flagged as Divergent (aka she fits more than one faction). This time, something tragic hits during the ceremony, upending everything and pushing her toward a different choice. That decision drops her into the sights of an underground rebellion and in the orbit of a mysterious boy who goes by a number instead of a name.
  • Publisher: HarperCollins Children’s Books. VP and publisher Erica Sussman is all-in, calling this take on the world a showcase of Roth’s strengths and a crowd-pleaser for longtime fans and newcomers.
  • Timing note: Roth points out this lands in the year of Divergent’s 15-year anniversary, which is a clever way to rediscover the characters from a fresh angle.
  • Screen prospects: Nothing announced yet for an adaptation of the new duology.

So what does 'companion timeline' actually mean?

Roth is being pretty clear: this is not a sequel, not a prequel, and not a side story. It runs parallel to the first book but forks at the Choosing Ceremony. Tris’s original Dauntless leap? Off the table. Different choice, different fallout, same world. If you like clean narrative experiments, this is one.

Quick refresher: the film history

The original trilogy hit theaters as Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015), and Allegiant (2016), starring Shailene Woodley as Tris and Theo James as Four. A fourth movie, Ascendant, was supposed to wrap things up, but it was scrapped after Allegiant’s soft box office. Given that history, it’s probably smart they’re leading with the books here; again, no word yet on adapting this new arc.

The Sixth Faction lands October 6. Preorders, start your engines.
