So, about that Sullivan's Crossing cliffhanger: the guy Maggie once called a summer fling? Turns out he is not a fling. He is her secret husband. And he is very much in the picture in season 4, played by Marcus Rosner.

How we got from 'fling' to 'husband'

Season 3 (which hit Netflix in August 2025 ) planted the seed when Maggie (Morgan Kohan) casually mentioned Liam (Rosner) to Lola (Amalia Williamson) as a vacation romance from before she finished med school. They met abroad, sparks flew, then life happened and they lost touch.

Later, Cal (Chad Michael Murray) stumbled on letters Maggie wrote to Liam, basically telling him their long-term thing could not work because she was choosing her career. From there, the season steered into Maggie-and-Cal territory. Even though they never made it 'official,' they were acting like a couple while dealing with real stuff — Cal reconnected with his estranged dad, who was terminally ill, and Maggie was there for all of it.

When they got back to Sullivan's Crossing, Cal asked Maggie to move in. They even started sketching out a future. Then the late check-in from earlier that day introduced himself: Liam. And he proceeded to blow up Cal's night by calling himself Maggie's husband. Cut to black. See you next season.

Season 4’s playbook

Season 4 premiered on The CW on Monday, April 20, and it is not dodging the bomb it just dropped. Expect flashbacks to fill in what actually happened between Maggie and Liam before she moved to Canada — the meet-cute, the commitment, and how it got buried.

Kohan has also said Maggie’s cold feet with Cal now makes more sense in hindsight. At the time, even she did not know the full Liam backstory or what 'husband' meant in practice, but she flagged the obvious: Maggie and Cal have some trust to rebuild, and fast.

Will Liam actually break them up?

Showrunner Roma Roth told Collider back in July 2025 that the show is a romance drama, which means you need friction to keep it alive. She designed season 3 around second chances — letting characters who had been through the wringer rediscover love — and kept things lighter than usual to give everyone some hope and breathing room. Then she saved a major jolt for the finale so season 4 could dig into the fallout. Translation: emotion, drama, and yes, a few surprises are baked in.

Personally, he got engaged to longtime girlfriend Alison Kroeker in December 2020, married her a year later, and they welcomed their first child in January 2026.

Professionally, Rosner has been easing behind the camera, too. In April 2026 he told The Northern Arizona Times that while acting is still his favorite place to live — those beats between 'action ' and 'cut' — directing gives him a different kind of creative control that he has been craving. Years of acting sharpened his eye for performance, producing taught him how the machine runs, and now writing and directing feel like a natural extension. He says that mix has helped him zero in on what is actually doable, what is interesting, and how to build a tone and visual style that feels like his.
