This New Sci-Fi Drama With The Bear Star Is the Best Time-Loop Movie in Years
Are you ready for some time travel?
Groundhog Day introduced the fashion for time loops. The characters of movies of various genres live one or more days in a row over and over again.
Usually, the purpose of the trip into the past is either to change events that have already occurred or to change the character's personality. With each new repetition, the protagonist, who has the opportunity to see the consequences of his actions, becomes better.
Another movie of this genre, Omni Loop, was made by the not very famous Brazilian director Bernardo Britto. First of all, the movie attracts attention with two performers of the main roles – Mary-Louise Parker from Billions and Ayo Edebiri from The Bear. The former gives one of the best performances of her career, while the latter remains in the background.
What Is Omni Loop About?
At the age of 12, Zoya found a jar of magic pills on a golf course. You take one and you are transported back five days. This amazing remedy helped Zoya throughout her life. At the age of 55, she is a successful writer, and is diagnosed with a black hole in her lungs – in five days, she will die.
Thanks to the pills, Zoya relives the last days before death – from the terrible diagnosis to a sad party with relatives, until one day she meets a student, Paula. The couple tries to understand the nature of the magic drugs and the loop.
Omni Loop Is a Fresh Take on Groundhog Day-style Movies
Britto handles a familiar concept in an unconventional way. In Omni Loop there is only one fantastic element – magic pills that send you back in time.
Perhaps due to frequent use of the drug, a black hole has formed in Zoya's chest that threatens to suck the traveler into eternity. The pills send a person back exactly five days – if you drink a handful of the drug, nothing will change.
The writer is tired of living the same events over and over again. Zoya does not want to die, so together with her young partner she tries to defeat death, to find a way to control the past and the future. The task seems impossible at first, but two scientists conduct dozens of tests.
Omni Loop Is Based on One Simple Idea
In many ways, Britto's film is reminiscent of a scientific experiment – two women conducting experiments over and over again, hoping that perhaps on the hundredth repetition they will achieve the desired result.
Zoya's life is on the line, but the drama is easy to watch, as the time traveler keeps reminding Paula where the scientists stopped last time and what still needs to be tried.
Omni Loop arrives at simple conclusions in a tortuous way. Trying to change the natural course of fate has become an end in itself for Zoya. The owner of the magic pills does not live in the moment, and the value of happy moments has noticeably decreased.
Happy moments are precious for their uniqueness. Therefore, the Brazilian director asks all time travelers to return to their loved ones and to throw away all cars and medicines for time travel.
