The Rookie blew up the run-up to its season 8 finale with a jaw-dropping death, as Monica (Bridget Regan) made a desperate bid to outrun both the Feds and the arms dealer she crossed in the Monday, April 27 episode.

The Rookie just pulled the rug two episodes from the end: Monica is dead. Yes, that Monica. The April 27 episode takes her off the board in a way that is brutal, efficient, and very The Rookie. Here is exactly how it goes down, why it actually makes sense, and what Bridget Regan has to say about leaving after four years.

The setup and the hit

Monica (Bridget Regan) spends the hour trying to wriggle out from under both the Feds and the arms dealer she burned. After a tense chat with her ex, Wesley (Shawn Ashmore), she makes a run for it. The escape plan dies the second her driver cruises past the LAX exit. Monica knows what that means. She asks one last favor: do not shoot her in the face. The gunman puts two rounds in her chest instead and dumps the body on the side of the road.

The squad converges. Tim (Eric Winter), Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Nyla (Mekia Cox), Angela (Alyssa Diaz), Grey (Richard T. Jones), and Garza (Felix Solis) are first on scene. Wesley arrives soon after. It is the kind of grim, no-mistaking-it ending you get right before a finale — in this case, ahead of the Season 8 capper.

Why this tracks, even if it hurts

Regan told TV Insider she was not shocked when showrunner Alexi Hawley made the call. If you have watched Monica glide past consequences for years, you probably are not either. The character has dodged multiple assassination attempts and slipped past prison time; there is only so long you can juggle federal pressure and furious criminals before gravity wins.

"She is not on her ninth life. She is on her 37th."

Regan says the surprise was not that Monica died — it was the sadness that she never pivoted to the light. There was a version of the character that could have tried to make good. Instead, she doubled down, again and again, until there were no more outs. After four seasons on the show, Regan is grateful for the run, but she admits it was probably time for the consequences to land.

The character, distilled to one line

Monica goes out the way she lived: unapologetically herself. That last line — not in the face — is pitch-perfect Monica. Vain. Fabulous. Greedy. A little smug. Regan says playing her meant constantly walking a tightrope: strong enough to survive in a criminal world, but just heightened enough to be delicious fun. She was promised an epic exit at some point and always figured the character would end up in only one of two places: jail or dead. The dice finally came up dead.

  • Who finds Monica: Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox), Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz), Sgt. Grey (Richard T. Jones), and Matthew Garza (Felix Solis), with Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore) arriving after.
  • The enemies she has tempted fate with: Elijah, Aiden, and Cooper Johnson — a greatest-hits list of people you really should not cross unless you have an ironclad exit plan.

The offscreen part fans always wonder about

Regan jokes that anytime a showrunner calls, your stomach flips — is this the call of death? She also name-checks the classic paranoia of actors on heavy-body-count dramas who skim scripts asking, Do I die? Do I die? Do I die? In Monica's case, the answer finally came back yes, and Regan was ready. Emotional about leaving? Definitely. But also clear that, story-wise, it would have felt fake if this life never caught up with her.

What now

The fallout rolls straight into the season 8 finale. The Rookie airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
