St. Denis Medical ended season 2 on cliffhangers, and the big question for its return is timing — will it jump ahead again, or, as Mekki Leeper hinted to Us Weekly with Kahyun Kim, hold steady after this year’s brief skip?

St. Denis Medical just wrapped a spicy Season 2, and the big question going into Season 3 is simple: are we skipping ahead again or picking up right where that finale left us? The cast is thinking about it too, and yes, the Matt-Serena slow burn finally turned into an actual fire.

Will Season 3 jump in time?

Mekki Leeper, who plays Matt, is not exactly campaigning for another time leap. In a joint chat with Kahyun Kim (Serena), he pointed out that the show already hopped past the summer between Seasons 1 and 2.

"I wouldn't want to time jump. We got a little bit of a time jump this time. We skipped through the summer from seasons 1 to 2."

So, TBD on the timeline. But after that finale, I get why they might be tempted either way.

Where things stand after the finale

  • Ron (David Alan Grier) quietly pining? Not anymore. His crush on Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) is out in the open.
  • Matt and Serena are officially a couple. Not a tease, not a maybe. It happened.
  • The cast is curious how the show plays it from here, especially with those two big swings landing in the same episode.

About that Matt and Serena payoff

Leeper and Kim admit they were nervous but very intentional about getting this right. Their whole thing was making a romance you can actually root for without it feeling like a gimmick. Off camera, it helped that they were already friends and trusted each other while building out the more intimate beats. Kim called Leeper a generous scene partner and said the trust piece mattered a lot; Leeper agreed those scenes are hard to nail and way easier with a friend across from you.

The show, the vibe, the roster

If you jumped in late, St. Denis Medical premiered in 2024. It is a mockumentary about overworked doctors and nurses trying to keep an underfunded Oregon hospital afloat. The cast includes Mekki Leeper (31) and Kahyun Kim (36) alongside Wendi McLendon-Covey, David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, and Kaliko Kauahi.

Fans clocked Matt and Serena’s chemistry immediately. Creator Eric Ledgin hinted way back in November 2024 that he was in no rush to cash that check.

"There’s definitely at least a one-sided will-they-or-won’t-they happening... it’ll definitely be a slow burn of something that we will track over time."

That slow burn just paid off, which sets up a pretty interesting Season 3 dynamic: can the show keep the couple compelling now that they are together, and what does that do to the rest of the hospital circus?

What’s next

Good news: the series is renewed for Season 3. It is streaming on Peacock if you want to catch up or rewatch the build-up to that finale. As for whether we pick up the next morning or months later, the cast is nudging toward no jump, but the door is open. Personally, I’m all for staying in the mess we just left.
