You definitely wouldn't want to be in the shoes of these characters.

For many filmmakers, space is a vast, cold, and unfriendly place that symbolizes the ultimate form of loneliness.

Science fiction characters often find themselves alone or in groups, lost in the vastness of outer space with no means of communication or hope of rescue.

1. High Life, 2018

High Life is a minimalist drama by Claire Denis about the futility of existence. Monte and a baby are the only survivors of a space research station orbiting a supermassive black hole.

Through flashbacks, viewers learn the sad story of experiments to extract energy and maintain fertility in deep space. In these experiments, life-sentenced criminals served as test subjects.

The research did not bear fruit for many years until finally a girl was born on the station. However, this did not save the crew from slow degradation and death.

2. Pandorum, 2009

The spaceship Elysium departs from overpopulated Earth carrying hundreds of settlers. Immersed in a drug-induced sleep, the people are to populate the exoplanet Tanis 123 years later, but, of course, something does not go according to plan.

When Corporal Bower and Lieutenant Payton awaken, they find the ship's interior in ruins and bloodthirsty mutants roaming about.

3. Event Horizon, 1997

In Event Horizon, a rescue team is sent into orbit around Neptune where the missing Event Horizon ship appears out of nowhere after seven years.

The operation's commanders, Captain Miller and Dr. William Weir, gradually realize that an entity from another dimension is controlling the ship after the Horizon team conducted experiments with a high-tech spatial drive.

4. The Cloverfield Paradox, 2018

The crew of the Cloverfield research station, launched into space in 2028, must test the latest particle accelerator. The operation of this device could solve the most severe energy crisis on Earth.

After two years, the testing finally yields the desired result. However, the station's systems reboot, and the team loses contact with Mission Control. The planet is also no longer visible from any of the windows.

5. Gravity, 2013

Alfonso Cuarón is a master of working in different genres. The director transforms each film into a triumph of his vision.

Gravity is a techno-thriller about an emergency in space when the ship carrying astronauts Ryan Stone and Matt Kowalski collides with debris. Stone and Kowalski must find a way to reach the ISS descent models quickly, as there is no other means of returning to Earth.

Gravity is an incredibly beautiful and technically perfect story about the power of the human will that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats.
