Before The Big Bang Theory conquered TV, Chuck Lorre hints at a left-field hurdle from its rocky early days you didn’t see coming.

While promoting his memoir Sitcom, Chuck Lorre told Extra’s Derek Hough that the earliest version of The Big Bang Theory landed with a thud — starting with his own verdict on the script.

“The first pilot we shot, it failed,” he admitted. “The script stunk.”

Instead of walking away, CBS did something rare: it asked Lorre and his team to try again, even if no one could quite pin down what had gone wrong. They took roughly a year to rethink the show and shot a second pilot. That take clicked, and the series launched in 2007, running through 2019 — a run that turned its leads into TV fixtures.

  • Johnny Galecki — Leonard Hofstadter
  • Kaley Cuoco — Penny

Lorre — the multi-cam veteran behind Two and a Half Men, Dharma & Greg and Mom — said the do-over made all the difference for the Pasadena-set hangout comedy that became a phenomenon.

Stuart’s multiverse mess

The franchise ’s newest extension, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, shifts from apartment banter to sci-fi chaos. Kevin Sussman returns as comic-shop owner Stuart Bloom, whose mishap with a device built by Sheldon and Leonard unleashes a multiverse disaster.

Season 1 premiered on HBO Max on July 23, 2026 and wrapped on September 24 with a fourth-wall-busting finale that dropped Stuart into a reality staged like a television sitcom — complete with actors playing versions of themselves. The streamer renewed the show on August 14, just four episodes into its run.

  • Premiere: July 23, 2026 (HBO Max)
  • Renewal: August 14, 2026
  • Season 1 finale: September 24, 2026
  • Season 2 status: writers’ room started in September 2026; filming expected to begin in early 2027

Created by Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn, the spinoff blends familiar Big Bang faces with reality-bending sci‑fi. Season 2 does not have a premiere date yet, and the full returning cast hasn’t been announced.
