Taron Egerton Says He Was This Close to Playing Han Solo

Turns out the Millennium Falcon almost had a different pilot. In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Taron Egerton revealed he came surprisingly close to playing Han Solo in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story.
"I'll be honest," Egerton said. "I got on the Falcon. I was with Chewie. I was in the full costume." Yeah — it wasn't just a chat or a table read. The guy suited up and stood next to Chewbacca. But when it came time for the final round of auditions, he walked away.
"There was one more… there was another round that I decided not to do," he explained. "And it's far enough in the past now that I feel like I can say that. I hope no one feels annoyed that I have said it."
In the end, the role went to Alden Ehrenreich, who starred in the standalone Solo film that tried to explore the backstory of everyone's favorite Corellian smuggler. The movie got mostly favorable reviews — critics liked the performances and visuals — but it never really caught fire at the box office, and any talk of a sequel fizzled out fast.
Ehrenreich himself has been open about possibly returning, but only if it makes sense. "It depends on what it is," he said. "It depends on how it's done. It depends if it feels innate to the story."
Translation: don't hold your breath.
As for Egerton, no hard feelings. He's gone on to headline the Kingsman franchise, play Elton John, and dodge Wolverine rumors like it's a full-time job. But it's wild to think we were this close to a world where Han Solo had a Welsh accent.
