Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Premiere Recap: Gary Dies, Raj Returns, Chaos Reigns

The premiere of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe wastes zero time turning Pasadena into a punchline and a war zone. Stuart’s comic shop is somehow still open amid zombie hands, roving bandits and giant moths, but cash is useless now — customers barter for back issues and, yes, start lethal fights over whether Hawkeye counts as an Avenger. Into that chaos walks a second Stuart from another reality with bad news: a quantum interference device built by Sheldon, Leonard and Howard has splintered the cosmos into unstable universes, and the fix sits somewhere at Caltech.

So Stuart and resident geologist Bert Kibbler pack up for a road trip through the ruins. Along the way, they pass Penn & Teller juggling stray animals in exchange for canned food, dodge bandits near the Rose Bowl, and run into Denise — now a stickup artist who’s still pecking away at a screenplay. She’s with Gary (Michael Urie), a handsome jerk who trails the group when they push on toward Caltech, which locals now call a “deathtrap.”

Episode 1 is titled “Spoiler: Gary Dies.”

That title pays off the moment the quartet hits campus and sniper fire cuts Gary down. Stuart, Bert and Denise are grabbed by armed guards and marched straight into Bert’s old classroom — where they find a familiar face with a very unfamiliar beard.

Raj, with receipts

Kunal Nayyar drops in as Raj Koothrappali, imprisoned, under-socialized and more than a little traumatized. He lays out the backstory: the quantum gizmo scrambled history and reality, and now Caltech answers to a tyrant. In the kind of romantic arc only this show would deliver, Raj did get married after riding to his wedding on an elephant — before a giant moth ate his bride. He’s also terrified of the man currently running the institute.

Kripke’s kingdom

Enter Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie) at his most unhinged. In this reality he’s seized Caltech with an armed following, styles himself the “Grand Caliph of Monrovia, Flintridge and South Pasadena,” and hoards women, food and guns. Denise rebuffs him and he orders her execution, but separating the group turns out to be his mistake.

Bert turns a geology classroom into an armory, whipping up improvised grenades that rip through the halls. Denise slips her captors and reunites with the gang at the quantum device. Raj starts repairing it — until Kripke shoots him, unwilling to give up the world where he finally holds all the power.

Even dead, Raj saves the day: he’d left step-by-step instructions on paper. Denise and Stuart follow his notes; Bert goes hands-on with Kripke and pounds him into submission. The machine sputters to life, then surges — and when it looks ready to blow, Denise dives for cover as Stuart, Bert and Kripke get yanked into the next universe.

The trio lands inside a pristine, normal-looking Comic Center storefront. Outside, no moths, no carnage, no chaos — just blissful quiet. They don’t notice the green crystal lodged at the base of each of their necks, and this still isn’t home. The next episode promises to lay out the show’s multiverse rules as they try to escape yet another wrong reality.
