Strong Rotten Tomatoes start lifts Insidious: Out of the Further to franchise record
Insidious: Out of the Further is already sitting atop its franchise on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of theaters — but how high it climbed might surprise you.
Early reviews have pushed Insidious: Out of the Further to a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes after 48 notices — a franchise best that edges past the original film ’s 66%. That number could shift as more critics weigh in, but it ’s already a notable high-water mark for a series that’s usually landed in the “mixed” zone.
67% on Rotten Tomatoes after 48 reviews — the highest score in the Insidious franchise.
How it stacks up
Until now, none of the sequels had cracked “Fresh.” Here’s where the films currently stand on Rotten Tomatoes:
- Insidious (2011) — 66%
- Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) — 38%
- Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) — 56%
- Insidious: The Last Key (2018) — 35%
- Insidious: The Red Door (2023) — 39%
- Insidious: Out of the Further (2026 ) — 67% (after 48 reviews)
Early write-ups have been notably warmer than usual for the series, with several calling this the scariest follow-up yet. It’s a promising sign for a franchise that’s often been dinged for predictability as the mythology expanded.
New house, new nightmare
The new story centers on Gemma, a young mom raising her daughters in the house where she grew up. She discovers she can enter The Further — and the twist is brutal: once the entities there realize Gemma can pull things back into our world, they start using her to do it.
Jacob Chase (Come Play) directs and co-wrote the script with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. On the producing side are Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and franchise architects James Wan and Leigh Whannell.
Longtime stalwart Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier to tie the new tale into the established mythos, alongside a fresh cast:
- Amelia Eve
- Brandon Perea
- Maisie Richardson-Sellers
- Laura Gordon
- Sam Spruell
- Island Austin
Since its 2011 launch from Wan and Whannell, the Insidious saga has sprawled across prequels and sequels built around astral projection and The Further, scaring up more than $740 million worldwide at the box office.
Insidious: Out of the Further opens in theaters on August 21, 2026.
