Secret Husband Twist Pushes Maggie Straight to Divorce on Sullivan's Crossing
Sullivan’s Crossing turns Maggie’s bid to end her marriage into a minefield. In Us Weekly’s exclusive first look at the April 27 episode, she leans on Cal to fix the Liam situation — but the way out is anything but easy.
Well, that escalated. Sullivan's Crossing is not letting Maggie quietly erase her surprise marriage. In a clip from the Monday, April 27 episode, the show finally puts a label on the mess: no annulment, real divorce. And yes, Cal is the one breaking that news.
The clip: annulment vs. divorce, and why it matters
Maggie (Morgan Kohan) loops in Cal (Chad Michael Murray) to help her untangle the Liam situation, hoping an annulment would wipe the slate clean. Instead, Cal comes back with a very practical, very inconvenient update: they waited too long.
'I spoke with the lawyer's office and I am afraid you are going to have to file for divorce. There is a five-year time limit on refiling.'
That lands like a brick. Maggie does not love the difference between an annulment (pretend it never happened) and a divorce (acknowledge it did). Cal tries to keep it light, pointing out, not incorrectly, that at least she will not need to hunt for a lawyer given his past life in that exact profession. He also does the deep-breaths, it-will-be-OK thing. She is not convinced. Fair.
Wait, who exactly is Liam and how did we get here?
The show has been seeding this for a while, so here's the clean version:
- Back in season 3, Maggie casually told Lola (Amalia Williamson) about Liam (Marcus Rosner) as a summer fling she met on a trip abroad before finishing med school. Classic meet-cute, then they lost touch.
- Later, Cal stumbled onto letters Maggie had written to Liam, basically explaining she could not make it work long-term because her career came first.
- Meanwhile, Maggie and Cal were building... something. Not officially a couple yet, but they went through real stuff together, including Cal reconnecting with his estranged father, who was terminally ill. Maggie helped him through that, and by the time they got back to Sullivan's Crossing, Cal asked her to move in. Future- planning commenced.
- Then the season 3 finale pulled the rug: a guest who checked in earlier that day introduced himself to Cal as Liam — and called himself Maggie's husband.
What Morgan Kohan has said about the twist
Kohan has admitted she only heard hints about Liam early in season 3 and did not know he and Maggie were actually married until later. She knew he would turn up at some point, just not when or how, and she loved reading that cliffhanger. She also agrees that Maggie's hesitation with Cal makes a lot more sense if you factor in Liam lingering in the background.
As of her July 2025 chat with Swoon, Kohan said she was largely in the dark on Liam's deeper backstory in season 4, including what he really means by calling himself Maggie's husband. Translation: expect more conversations, and a trust rebuild for Maggie and Cal, because that is a pretty big thing to leave out.
The bottom line right now
The show is making Maggie deal with the marriage head-on. No clean annulment, a literal deadline blew that option up (there is a five-year time limit on refiling), and Cal is stepping into lawyer mode whether she asked for it or not. Complicated, messy, and very on brand for this corner of Nova Scotia drama.
Sullivan's Crossing is streaming on Netflix. Season 4 airs on The CW Mondays at 8 p.m. ET.
