Sam Raimi returns to his horror roots with 'Send Help,' his first R-rated film in 25 years. Starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien, the survival thriller hits theaters January 30, 2026, with early previews starting January 24.

After a long break from the genre, Sam Raimi is making a bold comeback with his latest project, 'Send Help.' This new survival thriller marks the director ’s first R-rated film in a quarter-century, a significant shift from his recent ventures into more family- friendly territory. Fans who have followed Raimi’s journey through horror classics and blockbuster hits will find plenty to be excited about as he returns to the style that made him a household name.

According to Bloody Disgusting, 'Send Help' has officially received an R rating from the MPA, citing “strong/bloody violence and language.” The film stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, and is set to open in theaters nationwide on January 30, 2026. Select audiences will get an early look during preview screenings beginning January 24. This marks Raimi’s first R-rated directorial effort since 2000’s 'The Gift,' which featured Cate Blanchett and Hilary Swank. Since then, he’s been known for films like 'Spider- Man' and 'Oz the Great and Powerful,' as well as the PG-13 horror 'Drag Me To Hell' and Marvel ’s 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.'

Back to the Roots of Survival Horror

'Send Help' brings together a strong cast, including Xavier Samuel, Dennis Haysbert, Chris Pang, Emma Raimi, and Edyll Ismail. The screenplay comes from Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the writing duo behind 'Freddy vs. Jason' and the 2009 reboot of 'Friday the 13th.' They also wrote the script for the 2017 'Baywatch' adaptation.

The official synopsis sets the stage for a tense, character-driven story:

"Send Help" is a survival horror thriller about two colleagues who become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash. On the island, they must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it ’s a battle of wills and wits to make it out alive.

Raimi’s Signature Style Returns

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Raimi hinted at a return to the mischievous, hands-on approach that defined his earlier work. Decades ago, his 'Evil Dead' films became infamous for putting lead character Ash through all kinds of physical torment, earning Raimi a reputation as one of horror’s most daring directors. For 'Send Help,' he admits to pushing his actors to the limit, saying,

"I threw vomit in Dylan's face. Throwing blood in Rachel's face, throwing water in her face, poking her with sticks. Okay, yeah, I might have poked her with a stick once."

He’s no stranger to practical effects, having once used real bugs in 'Drag Me To Hell' to create a truly unsettling scene for star Alison Lohman.

Dylan O’Brien took Raimi’s antics in stride, joking,

"Puke in the face, yeah. It was mangoes that looked like berries, but I guess it was mango."

Rachel McAdams confirmed the director’s hands-on style, adding,

"He will not allow anyone else to be the gunk-thrower."

She recalled,

"I thought he was kidding the first time, when he threw a bucket of water in my face, when the plane goes into the water. Nope! He takes his job very seriously. He practices. He rehearses."
