James Gunn has a blunt message for anyone hyping Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman, and it’s not the mealy-mouthed Hollywood kind.

On Oct. 4, DCU actor Frank Grillo — who plays Rick Flag Sr. — reshared a slick piece of fan art for Man of Tomorrow to his Instagram Story. The poster billed Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman , and that was enough to set rumor engines roaring again. Within hours, James Gunn jumped onto Threads to say the image wasn’t evidence of anything and that Grillo isn’t a source for who Arjona is playing.

Gunn posted a screenshot of his texts with Frank Grillo to Threads on Oct. 4 to shut down the Wonder Woman chatter.

Gunn even poked fun at Grillo for reposting the graphic because his own face was on it. More importantly, he stressed Grillo is “out of the loop” on Arjona’s role — or any supposed cameo — and told fans not to take the fan art seriously. In the text exchange Gunn shared, he ribbed Grillo for stoking both Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle talk; Grillo apologized and said he’d lay off sharing fan-made posters.

The mystery role

Arjona’s casting in Gunn’s Superman sequel was made official at CinemaCon in April 2026 , but her character has been locked down ever since. Trades have floated Maxima as a contender — the alien queen who’s long had a thing for Superman in the comics — and the Wonder Woman rumor keeps boomeranging back. Gunn has pushed back on those reports, saying he wasn’t confirming any of that.

Part of why the Wonder Woman talk won’t die: Gunn has publicly said Arjona would make a great Diana, and his simple act of following her on Instagram once sent fans into detective mode. Arjona hasn’t cracked either; when asked point-blank about Wonder Woman, she dodged, calling Gunn and Peter Safran “family ” and saying she’s thrilled to be in the DCU — without naming a character.

Bottom line: Gunn’s keeping Arjona’s role under wraps, and the Instagram poster wasn’t a reveal. Her addition to the sequel’s cast was confirmed at CinemaCon in April 2026.
