Ransom Canyon: how did Randall die? The official story is a one-car crash — Staten digs up proof there was a second
A sixteen-year-old runs off a West Texas road and the file closes as a single-vehicle accident. His father spends the next year refusing to accept the paperwork, and he has a physical reason not to.
Ransom Canyon opens a year after the funeral, with the case long closed and one man in town still working it. What he finds in the dirt is small, specific and impossible to square with the report.
Randall Kirkland was sixteen. The official account is that he lost control and left the road on his own — no other driver, no other car, nothing to investigate. Netflix premiered the series on April 17, 2025, ten episodes adapted from Jodi Thomas's novels, and the entire first season runs on Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) not believing a word of it.
The debris
Staten's evidence is a piece of truck debris recovered from the exact spot where Randall went off the road. Something else was there. A blue pickup, specifically, which turns the question from how did he crash into who hit him.

The trail runs through two people before it reaches the right one:
- Reid Collins (Andrew Liner) — CCTV puts him with a matching truck at a repair shop, and law enforcement confronts him at the rodeo in episode 5.
- Kit (Casey W. Johnson) — Lucas's brother. Reid handled the truck as a favor to him, under pressure over drug dealing.
- Lucas (Garrett Wareing) — kept outside the whole arrangement, including Kit signing emancipation papers for him as cover.
Neither Reid nor Kit was driving.
Who was behind the wheel
Margaret Brigman. Wife of Sheriff Dan Brigman (Eoin Macken), mother of Lauren (Lizzy Greene), drunk, and in the middle of an affair with Kit when she hit Randall's car.
Kit took the fall to protect her. Reid moved the truck without knowing whose crash he was covering. The cover-up held for a year because the people maintaining it were the people closest to the sheriff running the file.
Dan Brigman ends the season tracking his own wife to Austin and arresting her himself.
What the season does with it
The reveal is not the finale 's last move. The closing scene belongs to a woman walking into the dancehall claiming to be Yancy's wife, cutting across Ellie's plans and setting up the next season rather than closing this one.
The show was not warmly received — 45% on Rotten Tomatoes and 58 on Metacritic — and the Randall investigation was the piece most reviewers singled out as working.
Season 2 arrived July 23, 2026, eight episodes, with Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly back and Patricia Clarkson joining the cast. Quinn O'Grady returns to town, and the Kirkland ranch is still standing on ground its owner has now had two answers about.
For the record: the crash happens before episode 1. Randall exists in this series entirely as a case file and a photograph.
