President Curtis Takes Charge: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and How the Rick and Morty Spinoff Rewrites the Rules
All rise for President Curtis, the anarchic Rick and Morty spin-off—here’s when it drops and what chaos its plot unleashes.
If you have ever watched Rick cause planetary-scale chaos and thought, 'Who cleans this up?', well, now we are finding out. President Curtis, the show-stealing, ego-fragile-but-weirdly-formidable Commander-in-Chief from Rick and Morty, is getting his own spin-off. Yes, out of all the fan-favorite side characters who could carry a show, Adult Swim picked the guy who keeps trying to make Rick follow the rules. Bold choice. Smart one, too.
When it premieres (and how we know)
Adult Swim has not circled a specific day yet, but the network quietly confirmed a July 2026 launch on-air. They slipped a blink-and-you-missed-it teaser into the commercial breaks during Rick and Morty Season 9’s May 2026 premiere. Shortly after, trades and fan accounts flagged the spot on May 25, backing up the July window. So: July, Adult Swim, mark it in pencil.
'Releasing in July on Adult Swim.'
What the show is actually about
The premise is delightfully simple: Rick starts cosmic, paranormal, and interdimensional disasters like most people start hobbies, then wanders off when he gets bored. President Curtis and his spectacularly dysfunctional staff are the ones stuck managing the fallout. Expect monster-of-the-week scale problems with Oval Office panic, federal agencies in meltdown mode, and a lead character whose desperate need for approval collides with his very real knack for getting impossible things done. It is a great engine for stories because the messes are limitless and the politics are petty, messy, and funny.
Voice cast
Keith David is back as President Curtis, which frankly is the whole ballgame. His voice has that velvet-and-granite thing that makes every impulsive flex or insecure spiral land just right. Two more big adds are aboard, with roles still under wraps:
- Keith David as President Curtis
- Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
- Jim Rash (Community)
Who is making it (and a very nerdy origin detail)
President Curtis is co-created by Dan Harmon and James Siciliano for Adult Swim. The character himself dates back to the Rick and Morty episode 'Get Schwifty,' where Wes Archer and Tom Kauffman originally wrote him as a playful stand-in for then-President Barack Obama. That explains why he always felt oddly familiar even while he was ordering black ops teams to chase Rick through a national park.
Timeline check
Keith David mentioned earlier this year that the spin-off was set to arrive in 2026, and now Adult Swim’s teaser nails it down to July. Meanwhile, Rick and Morty Season 9 is streaming right now, which is basically perfect hype timing for a summer launch.
Bottom line: President Curtis is finally getting the spotlight, and the pitch is clean and promising. July is not far. I am very ready to watch the White House try to patch over Rick’s interdimensional hangovers every week. You in?
