Power Rangers Solved Its Greatest Mystery 27 Years Ago — And Most Fans Never Noticed
Power Rangers has spent 30 years unmasking villains and revealing secret bonds — but one twist may outdo them all.
Power Rangers has never been shy about pulling the rug out from under us, but one season-long mystery still towers over the rest. If you know, you know: the In Space saga that turned a missing-person case into one of the franchise 's best character arcs.
The setup: a Red Ranger with a missing sister
Power Rangers In Space already had a lot working in its favor, and right at the center was Andros, the Red Ranger from KO-35, haunted by his little sister Karone being abducted when they were kids. He never stopped searching. The big questions were simple and brutal: who took her, and why?
The reveal: it was Darkonda, and that was only half the shock
On May 16, 1998, the episode 'Flashes of Darkonda' finally answered the first part: Darkonda was the one who kidnapped Karone. That unlocks the bigger twist the season had been circling for weeks — Karone grew up to become Astronema, the Rangers' main nemesis. Yep, the sister he has been trying to find is the villain he's been trying to stop.
How Karone became Astronema
After the abduction, Karone was raised and trained by Ecliptor, who kept her in the dark about her past and fed her lies about the Rangers and her brother. She climbed the ladder among the bad guys, built an army, and earned the 'Princess of Evil' title from Dark Specter. Her marching orders: find and eliminate the Ranger spy who crashed a big villains-only summit — not realizing the spy was her own brother, Andros. And because she was not messing around, she also created the Psycho Rangers, some of the deadliest antagonists the show ever put on screen.
The cosmic reset that changed everything
Then the story swerved. After Dark Specter fell — during what was supposed to be Astronema's coronation as 'Queen of Evil' — Zordon was destroyed, unleashing the Z-Wave across the universe. That wave scrubbed the evil out of everyone it touched, and that included Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd, and Astronema. Karone came back to herself and reunited with Andros. For a kids show, that is a wildly ambitious way to close a loop.
From arch-villain to Pink Ranger
The arc did not stop at redemption. In Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, Karone actually became a Ranger. After the team's Pink Ranger, Kendrix Morgan, died, Kendrix's spirit saved Karone and passed her Transmorpher to her, making Karone the new Pink Ranger. It's a full-circle move that still hits hard.
- Early childhood: Karone is kidnapped from KO-35; Andros begins searching.
- Raised by Ecliptor: trained, lied to about her past, builds power base.
- 'Flashes of Darkonda' (May 16, 1998): Andros learns Darkonda took Karone.
- The twist: Karone is Astronema, named 'Princess of Evil' by Dark Specter.
- Mission gone personal: ordered to root out a Ranger spy — actually Andros.
- Escalation: she creates the Psycho Rangers.
- Game-changer: Zordon's destruction triggers the Z-Wave, purging evil across the universe — including Astronema.
- Aftermath: Karone is restored and reunited with Andros.
- Next chapter: in Lost Galaxy, Kendrix's spirit gives Karone the Transmorpher; Karone becomes the Pink Ranger.
Three decades of Power Rangers has delivered plenty of twists, but Andros and Karone's saga is still top-tier: mystery, identity whiplash, cosmic consequences, and a redemption that actually sticks.
