From battlefield comrades to OR soulmates, Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman played the long game on Grey's Anatomy—reuniting when she arrived in season 6 as Seattle Grace’s new cardiothoracic chief and, after years side by side, finally letting the sparks fly.

If you have whiplash from the Owen/Teddy roller coaster, you are absolutely not alone. Two trauma- tested surgeons who started as colleagues in a war zone, missed each other by miles in Seattle, then finally built a family together… only to blow it up, try an open marriage, and, yes, still fall back into bed after the divorce papers. Oh, and season 22 marks Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd’s final run as series regulars. So let’s walk it back and make sense of how we got here.

  • Season 6 (2009): Teddy Altman lands at Seattle Grace as the new cardiothoracic chief, reuniting with her Iraq buddy Owen Hunt.
  • Earlier: In Iraq, Teddy quietly pined for Owen while he was engaged to Beth; they served with Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer) and Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), who were the ones actually dating.
  • Season 5-7: Owen returns from deployment, becomes head of trauma, falls for Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), and they marry.
  • Season 8: Teddy marries patient Henry Burton (Scott Foley) for insurance; he dies on Cristina’s table. About a season later, Owen and Cristina split over kids.
  • Post-divorce: Owen’s brief marriage to Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) also ends over the kid question; he adopts son Leo on his own.
  • Season 15 (2019): Teddy comes back full-time after running the military’s surgical team from Germany.
  • Season 14-15: Owen flies to Germany to confess his feelings; they hook up and conceive daughter Allison. Back in Seattle, Teddy briefly dates Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) before reuniting with Owen; they marry after Allison’s birth.
  • Season 19: Owen nearly loses his license for illegally prescribing meds to veterans seeking physician-assisted deaths; Teddy becomes chief of surgery.
  • Season 21: With the marriage wobbling, they try opening it up. Teddy sees Cass (Sophia Bush); Owen sees Nora (Floriana Lima).
  • Season 22: They call off the experiment, recommit, hit the same wall anyway. Teddy files for divorce. Papers get signed. Then they hook up again. Also: Raver and McKidd’s final season as main cast.

Before Seattle: sand, scrubs, and missed timing

Owen and Teddy met as military surgeons in Iraq, alongside Megan Hunt and Nathan Riggs. Sparks flew there… just not for the two of them. Teddy carried a torch for Owen while he was engaged to Beth, and by the time life brought them back stateside, they were out of sync again.

Seattle Grace turbulence: Cristina, Henry, and heartbreak

Back home in season 5, Owen took over trauma at Seattle Grace and fell hard for Cristina Yang. They married in season 7. Meanwhile, he recruited Teddy to lead cardio, where Cristina was training. Teddy then married Henry Burton, a patient who needed insurance, and fell for him for real — only to lose him on Cristina’s table in season 8. About a season later, Owen’s marriage to Cristina ended when he realized she truly did not want children.

Second chances and solo parenting

Owen tried again with Amelia Shepherd; they married briefly but unraveled over the same kids issue. He adopted Leo as a single dad. Teddy exited after season 8 and resurfaced full-time in season 15, having spent the intervening years running the military’s surgical team from a base in Germany.

Friends to finally lovers

The penny dropped for Owen in season 14, so he flew to Germany to say it out loud. One whirlwind later, Teddy was pregnant with their daughter, Allison. Back in Seattle (by then renamed Grey Sloan Memorial), Teddy dated Tom Koracick for a beat, then circled back to Owen. They married after Allison arrived.

Career crosswinds and a marriage under pressure

Season 19 put Owen in serious jeopardy: he was nearly stripped of his medical license for quietly helping veterans access physician-assisted deaths. At the same time, Teddy took the top job as chief of surgery. McKidd said in April 2023 that the two were clawing their way back to being a team, with Owen — a former chief himself in seasons 8 through 11 — steadying her from the trauma bay side while she ran the hospital.

The open-marriage experiment

By season 21, the fighting had calcified into a lifestyle, and they went the unconventional route to avoid a split. Kim Raver explained the thinking in April 2025:

'Teddy and Owen have been arguing for so long and they’re not getting along. When we were talking with Meg [Marinis, the showrunner], it came from a place where Owen and Teddy love each other so deeply that they’re not ready to walk away from the relationship. So what do you do?'

So they tried it: Owen with Nora (Floriana Lima), Teddy with Cass (Sophia Bush). As experiments go, it looked good on paper and messy in practice.

Season 22: papers signed, lines blurred

They shut the door on the open setup and promised monogamy, but the old patterns didn’t change. Teddy filed for divorce. Then, in true Grey’s fashion, once the ink dried they ended up in bed again anyway. And with that, season 22 closes the book on Owen and Teddy as series regulars, at least for Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd. Whether the door is locked or just slightly ajar — that’s the kind of unresolved business this show loves to keep in its back pocket.
