In a recent sit-down on Happy Hour with Ina Garten, Sofia Coppola traced her take on Marie Antoinette back to one startling detail she first heard from a friend: the future queen was just 14 when she arrived at Versailles. That sent her to historian Antonia Fraser’s biography and reframed the movie as a story about a teenager dropped into a royal machine.
“I had no idea that she was so young and so then it made me curious,” she said. “I read her (Antonia Fraser’s Marie Antoinette: The Journey) book and it was so interesting to me that made her human and showed her all these details of her as a young girl.”
Among the small, piercing moments Coppola said stuck with her: Marie Antoinette’s pet dog was taken from her as she crossed into French court life — a ritual detail that helped strip away the myth and make the character feel like a kid in over her head.
The focus of the film
Rather than retracing every political beat, Coppola’s 2006 film leans into mood and emotion: the loneliness of a teenager stranded in a palace, the rituals that close in, the sweetness and sting of first freedoms.
