Nolan’s The Odyssey ticket frenzy sends fans to Reddit as resale prices explode
Resale prices for IMAX tickets to Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey vaulted far above face value within hours of release.
At New York’s AMC Lincoln Square 13—the city’s lone screen capable of IMAX 70mm—the rush has turned surgical. Variety reports that wheelchair spaces were the only inventory left as of this week, with every 2 a.m. show sold out through August 2 and remaining dates booked through August 12. Fans hunting for a seat to The Odyssey have spilled onto Reddit, while eBay listings have pushed a $33 face-value ticket to $69 bids and one July 22 pair soaring to $1,200. AMC hasn’t announced additional showtimes.
Reddit steps in
On r/NYCmovies, daily “ISO” posts beg for spares at Lincoln Square. Moderators are actively weeding out scalpers posing as fellow fans, according to Variety, which spoke with Tessa, a mod on the subreddit.
"People are very quick to report if someone is trying to sell them tickets above face value (scalping),"
Tessa told the outlet, adding that bans are swift when someone gets flagged.
"Anytime we get a report of someone doing that, we ban their account. However, often these scalpers, once they are discovered, will delete their own accounts and will make new ones."
Why the format matters
The frenzy isn’t just about seeing Nolan’s film early—it ’s about seeing it in the format he built it for. The movie was captured entirely on IMAX film cameras, preserving a towering 1.43:1 frame; only about 30 theaters worldwide can project that in 70mm, which is why Lincoln Square has become ground zero.
- IMAX 70mm film — Full-height 1.43:1 image on celluloid; Nolan’s complete frame as shot.
- IMAX with Dual Laser — Digital presentation that retains the full 1.43:1 frame.
- Standard Digital IMAX — Cropped to 1.90:1; taller than standard, but not the full height.
- Traditional 70mm film — Big, crisp film image with a wider, cropped composition.
- Dolby Cinema — Premium digital picture and sound, but a wider, cropped frame.
- 35mm — Film texture with the most vertical image trimmed.
- Standard digital — The widest crop, but the same story and performances.
For New Yorkers eyeing the definitive IMAX 70mm screening, Reddit has become the backchannel—but with moderators on alert and scalpers cycling through burner accounts, it’s a fast-moving target. As of now, Lincoln Square’s overnights are gone through August 2, with the rest of the run locked up through August 12.
