Mission: Impossible’s Streaming Triumph Turns the Tables for Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise’s latest Mission: Impossible installment storms to the top of Paramount+, outshining its box office run with a record-breaking streaming debut. Discover how the franchise’s newest chapter is rewriting its legacy online.
Tom Cruise has once again claimed the spotlight, as Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning soared to the number one spot on Paramount+ upon its streaming release. Whenever a new Cruise-led blockbuster hits streaming platforms, it ’s almost a given that it will dominate the charts, and this latest entry in the iconic action series is no exception.
Star-Studded Cast and High-Stakes Story
The film features a powerhouse ensemble, including Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Mark Gatiss, Rolf Saxon, and Lucy Tulugarjuk. Christopher McQuarrie returned to direct, co-writing the screenplay with Erik Jendresen.
Two months after the events of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) continue their search for the Entity, a terroristic AI that has infiltrated intelligence networks across the globe. As pressure mounts while Hunt and his team are pursued by governments, ghosts from his past emerge in the latest installment of the iconic action spy series.
Box Office Setbacks and Production Challenges
Despite high expectations, the previous film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, underperformed at the box office. Hopes were pinned on a quick rebranding of its sequel—originally titled Dead Reckoning Part 2—to help the franchise move past its recent struggles. Still, with a global take of $598 million against a reported $300–400 million budget, the movie left Paramount facing significant losses.
The journey to complete The Final Reckoning was anything but smooth. The original plan was to shoot it back-to-back with its predecessor, but scheduling changes in 2021 led to a major overhaul. Production was further complicated by the industry strikes of 2023, causing delays and driving up costs, much like the high-flying stunts Cruise performed for the film.
Critical Response and Streaming Redemption
While reviews were generally positive, the film didn’t quite reach the heights of earlier franchise entries. Critics awarded it an 80% score, and audiences rated it at 88%. Now, the movie’s impressive streaming debut is helping to offset its theatrical shortcomings, with other Mission: Impossible titles also climbing the Paramount+ charts.
At present, Cruise holds the top four spots on the U.S. streaming chart. The original Mission: Impossible and its sequel occupy second and fourth place, while his action thriller American Made sits in third. Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick continues to hold onto a spot in the Top 10, currently at number ten.
The Future of the Franchise
Despite its title, The Final Reckoning may not be the last chapter for Ethan Hunt. While it’s uncertain if Cruise will reprise his role anytime soon, the enduring popularity of the franchise means there’s always a chance for another mission down the line.
