James Cameron has confirmed Michelle Yeoh’s casting as a Na’Vi named Palakpuelat in Avatar 4 and 5, but the future of the sequels is still up in the air due to industry setbacks. The next two Avatar films are tentatively scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031.

James Cameron has shared that Michelle Yeoh is lined up to play a Na’Vi character in the upcoming Avatar sequels, but he’s not sure if those films will actually make it to the big screen. In a recent interview with TVBS News Japan, Cameron said Yeoh is set to portray Palakpuelat, a performance-capture role, in the fourth installment of the franchise —if it gets the green light.

He explained that the movie business is facing tough times right now, and the third Avatar film came with a hefty price tag. The director emphasized that the future of the series depends on how well the next movie performs, saying,

"The industry is in a slump and Avatar 3 was very expensive, so the franchise’s success is key to moving forward."

Uncertain Future for the Avatar Franchise

While Avatar 4 and 5 have been on the table since the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron admitted he can’t guarantee they’ll happen. The two sequels are currently slated for December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, but shifting industry conditions and financial hurdles could impact those plans. Cameron noted,

"While the sequels are planned, I am not certain if they will happen due to financial and industry challenges."

Michelle Yeoh, who just wrapped up her work on Wicked, is also set to star in the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 series for Prime Video. Her addition to the Avatar universe is expected to bring even more star power to the already massive franchise.

Avatar’s Ongoing Success and Yeoh’s Expanding Career

The Avatar series continues to draw huge audiences worldwide. The latest entry, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has already surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, showing that the franchise still has plenty of momentum. This success could play a crucial role in determining whether the next two films move forward as planned.

Yeoh’s involvement in multiple high-profile projects highlights her growing influence in Hollywood. As fans await more news about the future of Avatar, her role as Palakpuelat is sure to be one of the most anticipated elements of the potential sequels.
