Meet Searching for Stars Hollow, the Gilmore Girls documentary with cast and release details
A Gilmore Girls documentary, previously called Searching for Stars Hollow, is on the way with a new name—and the lowdown on its release, cast, and what it explores.
Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki, Chad Michael Murray and a clutch of Stars Hollow regulars have recorded new interviews for Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, a feature-length, independently made look back at Gilmore Girls that was previously titled Searching for Stars Hollow. The project gathers memories from the set alongside fan perspectives — but it ’s being made outside the official Gilmore orbit, and Amy Sherman-Palladino, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are not part of it.

The filmmakers say they spoke with more than 30 additional cast and crew members, plus devoted fans, to round out the story.
Because it’s an independent production — not affiliated with or endorsed by Warner Bros. or the show’s original producers — the biggest names tied to the franchise, including Amy Sherman-Palladino, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, are not involved.
Release plan
There’s no premiere date yet. The team had been targeting summer 2026 , and a first trailer arrived in late 2025 , but release timing can shift for indie docs and no theatrical or streaming home has been named.
Kickstarter backers pledged nearly $300,000 from more than 2,700 supporters.
The film is directed by Meghna Balakumar and Kevin Konrad Hanna, with Adam F. Goldberg on board as executive producer and Jim Demonakos producing.
What it covers
This isn’t a new chapter of the story; it’s not a continuation of the series. Instead, the documentary revisits how Gilmore Girls came together, why it hit so big, and how it keeps connecting with new viewers two decades on.
Expect fresh interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, cultural commentary and fan testimonials. The film digs into mother‑ daughter dynamics, the show’s found-family vibe, Stars Hollow’s cozy pull and the famous rapid‑fire dialogue — and it revisits key production moments, including changes during the final season after Sherman-Palladino’s departure.
Separately, Max is developing an authorized Gilmore Girls documentary that will include Sherman-Palladino, Graham and other core cast and crew, plus previously unseen archival material — a different project from this indie effort.
No theatrical or streaming platform has been announced for Drink Coffee, Talk Fast.
