Meet Infinity Vision: Disney's IMAX rival launching with Avengers: Doomsday
Marvel Studios will roll out a new interactive, theater-synced experience alongside the next Avengers movie across select auditoriums.
Disney is giving the big-screen showdown around Avengers: Doomsday an extra twist: a brand-new premium format called Infinity Vision. Instead of licensing IMAX screens, Disney is certifying auditoriums that meet its own specs so the studio can control where its biggest releases play on giant screens this winter and beyond.
- Screen size — at least 50 feet wide
- Projection — laser only
- Sound — Dolby 7.1 surround
Unlike IMAX, Infinity Vision won’t use an expanded, taller aspect ratio. The bet is on image brightness, sound and sheer scale, not a different picture shape.
Why now
The timing isn’t subtle. Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday both arrive on December 18, 2026 , and IMAX screens are expected to be in high demand for Denis Villeneuve ’s sand-and-spice epic. Disney’s answer is to seed its own network of giant screens. More than 7,500 theaters have reportedly applied, with as many as 5,500 screens potentially qualifying worldwide.
IMAX isn’t thrilled. An IMAX executive has reportedly waved off Infinity Vision as a marketing move, but audiences will get to judge the presentation before Marvel ’s next team-up lands.
How to see it first
Disney’s trial run is a special re-release: Avengers: Endgame Encore will screen in Infinity Vision starting September 25, 2026. Tickets went on sale July 20, alongside advance bookings for Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Endgame Encore adds seven minutes, a Russo brothers intro, and an expanded ending that tees up Avengers: Doomsday.
On the movie side, Marvel is loading the table. Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, the Russo brothers are back behind the camera, and the story is set to crash the Avengers into the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four and the Fox-era X-Men. The collision point remains December 18, 2026 — now with a new giant-screen format vying for your ticket.
