Matthew McConaughey dusted off a “meet God” thought experiment and came away with a curveball insight that reshaped how he looks at gratitude and life.

On Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Matthew McConaughey walked through how his imagined meeting with God has changed over time — right down to a two-word swap that checked his ego and reframed his gratitude.

“Thank you.”

That was the line he once pictured hearing from above after a life well lived. Then, about five years ago, he caught himself.

“That's a bit arrogant,” he remembered thinking. Perhaps the greeting would actually be “You're welcome.”

He talked about the way time can crawl one day and vanish the next, and how smooth stretches and rough patches trade places without warning. McConaughey said he doesn’t have neat answers — just a growing emphasis on appreciation and keeping his ego in check.

From faith talk to sci‑fi

That curiosity is also fueling his first video game role. McConaughey will voice C.C. Orlev in Exodus, a science‑fiction RPG from Archetype Entertainment, the studio founded by veteran role‑playing developers. Orlev is pitched as an enigmatic space cowboy with motives that aren’t entirely clear.

  • Players step into the boots of Jun Aslan, a salvager turned Traveler fighting to protect his homeworld.
  • The far‑future setting pits humanity against the Celestials — powerful descendants of humanity’s own evolution.
  • Long‑haul space travel introduces time dilation, so choices can ripple across generations.
  • Exodus emphasizes consequential decisions, relationships, and survival across a massive universe.
  • Release date: April 7, 2027 .
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
