Fans primed for House of the Dragon’s defining dragon duel may want to temper expectations: Matt Smith is casting serious doubt on Daemon’s Gods Eye showdown.

If you were already picturing Daemon Targaryen blazing across the sky toward that big, bloody showdown over the Gods Eye… maybe keep the champagne on ice. Matt Smith is hinting we might not see that exact spectacle on House of the Dragon, at least not in the way book readers expect.

Quick catch-up on where Daemon is mentally (and literally)

Daemon has been a mess of ambition, guilt, and open warfare since day one. He went from ruthlessly carving his way through court politics to teaming up (uneasily) with his wife, Rhaenyra. He flips between battle-hungry and self-destructive, and Season 2 leans into that hard: he bails on Team Black HQ (Dragonstone), falls in with a witch, starts stirring the pot across the Riverlands, and gets haunted by visions of his own death. So, yeah, not stable.

The book thing everyone is waiting for

If you know George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, you know exactly where Daemon's path in the book leads: the Battle Above the Gods Eye, an all-time Targaryen dragon duel that lives rent-free in every reader's head. It 's the aerial, fire-scorched moment fans have been counting down to since the series began.

So… are we getting it?

Smith, talking to SFX magazine, basically poured a little cold water on the certainty. He did not shoot it down, but he definitely did not confirm it either. This is where those behind-the-scenes realities creep in: actors usually do not see the full plan until the scripts land, and even then, things can shift.

"One assumes they're headed there, but you never know. It's quite present in the story, isn't it? Even in the book, it's been illustrated. It's surely got to head there, but I'm not privy to the details of it until the script. But I'm going to cross my fingers too."

Read between the lines

  • He knows the Gods Eye duel is the big one and absolutely on fans' minds.
  • He thinks the show is probably steering that direction, because how could it not?
  • He does not have confirmation yet, which means the when/where/how may not be locked for the current run of scripts.
  • Translation: expect some deviations in the build-up, timing, or execution, even if the show eventually flies there.

The interesting part is how Season 2 is already remixing Daemon's headspace: ditching Dragonstone, partnering with a witch, scheming in the Riverlands, and seeing his own death. All of that could be setting up the Gods Eye… or it could be the show zagging so the famous book moment lands differently. Either way, Smith is crossing his fingers. Me too, but I am not betting the house on seeing the exact aerial slugfest you have in your imagination this season.
