In the midst of The Odyssey’s toughest water shoot, a single remark from Matt Damon lifted the crew’s morale.
Sideways rain, a churning sea, and a rowing skiff fighting wind machines off the coast of Favignana, Italy — that’s where Christopher Nolan decided to keep cameras rolling. The boat sequence for The Odyssey wasn’t cushioned by green screens or warm stages; it was shot in real weather with a hose blasting the cast as they scrambled for oars.
According to Himesh Patel — who plays Eurylochus — morale dipped hard that night until Matt Damon cut through the chaos with one line. Patel told Men’s Health the words landed like a reset button for the soaked, exhausted team.
“There are thousands of actors in SAG, and every single one of them would kill to be where you are.”
That set matched the speech. Patel said Nolan enforced a no-phones policy and kept chairs off the deck to keep everyone present in the elements. The storm itself was largely practical: wind rigs and a firehose worked from a nearby boat to sell the squall instead of leaning on VFX.
“It’s going to be difficult”
Months before the shoot, Nolan privately warned Damon that The Odyssey would be a grind. Damon, by his own telling, laughed it off — he’d made roughly 80 films and figured he’d seen it all. Then came nights like Favignana and freezing location work in Iceland, and the warning stopped sounding theoretical.
Damon has since called the production the toughest of his career, crediting Nolan’s strip-it-down approach at blockbuster scale for pushing performances that couldn’t be faked.
