Marvel’s Most Criticized Director Eyes Invincible, Suggests Snyder for Adaptation
After nearly a decade of waiting, Invincible fans may finally see a live-action adaptation. The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has voiced her desire to bring Robert Kirkman’s gritty comic to theaters, but hints that Zack Snyder could be the ideal filmmaker for the job. Find out why this superhero project is stirring up so much buzz.
It ’s been almost ten years since the announcement of a live-action Invincible movie, and now, Nia DaCosta—best known for helming The Marvels—has publicly shared her enthusiasm for adapting Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed comic series for the big screen. As she gears up for the release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, DaCosta took part in a Reddit AMA, where she made it clear she has a distinct vision for the project, especially when it comes to capturing the story’s raw edge and emotional depth.
DaCosta’s Vision for Invincible
During her AMA, DaCosta didn’t hold back about her passion for the material. She emphasized her appreciation for the dynamic between the main characters and the series’ willingness to push boundaries. In her own words:
I would LOVE to direct a live action film version of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible. The comic and cartoon are amazing. I know exactly how I’d want to translate that world, and that amazing father/son relationship, to screen. I also just love the idea of making something in a superhero world that has some real grit and viscera–and s-x!
Despite her interest, it’s uncertain if DaCosta will get the chance to take on the project, especially given the mixed response to her previous superhero film. The reception of The Bone Temple could play a role in shaping her future opportunities. Still, some believe there’s an even stronger candidate to bring Invincible to life: Zack Snyder.
Invincible’s Live-Action Status
Although a live-action adaptation was announced years ago, there’s been little movement since. The focus has largely remained on the animated series, which, according to Kirkman, could run for seven or eight seasons to fully cover the 144-issue comic saga.
The show has earned widespread praise from both critics and viewers, becoming a cultural phenomenon. This success has likely delayed any live-action plans, but Kirkman hasn’t closed the door on the idea. He recently commented:
Unfortunately, there’s not much I can say. I will say that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie. That’s kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately. It’s still early going. I would be shocked if it doesn’t happen one day.
With a fourth season on the way, fans have plenty to look forward to while waiting for any concrete news about a live-action version.
Why Snyder Might Be the Right Choice
Whenever the time comes to move forward with a live-action Invincible, Zack Snyder’s name stands out as a compelling option. While his track record with comic book movies has been hit or miss, his signature style—marked by intense action and a darker tone—could be a perfect match for Kirkman’s universe.
One challenge Snyder has faced is his tendency to write his own scripts, which hasn’t always led to the best results. Ideally, he would focus on directing, working from a strong screenplay that lets his visual strengths shine, much like he did with Man of Steel and Dawn of the Dead.
Snyder’s ability to craft epic, high-stakes action scenes could elevate Invincible’s story in a way that resonates with longtime fans and newcomers alike. As Kirkman and Amazon consider their options, the question of who will ultimately direct the adaptation remains open.
