Marvel killed Jean Grey’s sister, Sara — here’s why it meant nothing

Out of nowhere, Sara Grey is standing in front of her little sister again. The long-dead sibling of Jean Grey reappears alive and unharmed in Phoenix #12 by writer Stephanie Phillips — a twist landing after the end of Krakoa’s Resurrection Protocols, the in-story tech that used to bring fallen mutants back. For a character written off decades ago, it ’s a whiplash return with major implications for the Grey family.

Who she is

In the comics, Sara is Jean’s protective older sister, first mentioned in X-Men #22. She’s married with two kids, and for a time Jean blocks some of her memories to keep mutant business off her radar. Once Sara learns the truth, she becomes an outspoken supporter of mutant rights — and even worries whether her children might carry the X-gene.

• After speaking publicly in support of mutants, Sara and her family vanish.
• It’s later revealed she was murdered by anti-mutant extremists, likely tied to Cameron Hodge.
• Her fate is confirmed again when she’s shown among those absorbed by the techno-organic Phalanx in X-Men #36 (1994).

The abandoned plan

Behind the scenes, there was once a much bigger path for Sara. Chris Claremont originally intended for Jean to stay dead after the Dark Phoenix Saga and for Sara to step into X-Factor as a newly discovered mutant who could activate a person’s latent X-gene. That storyline never happened: then–Marvel editor Jim Shooter pushed for Jean’s resurrection, and Sara’s potential arc was shelved.

Sara Grey is brought back to life in Phoenix #12 (2025 ), decades after her 1994 death reveal in X-Men #36.

Why this return matters

Because it happens after Krakoa’s resurrections have been shut down, Sara’s comeback isn’t a routine X-Men reset — it’s a mystery. It also reopens a character whose story was cut short, now colliding directly with Jean’s present as the Phoenix saga continues.
