Marshals: what happened to Kayce's wife, Monica?
The Yellowstone spinoff Marshals premiered on CBS on March 1, 2026, with Luke Grimes returning as Kayce Dutton.
Within the first act, the show dropped a bombshell: Monica Dutton, Kayce's wife throughout all five seasons of Yellowstone, is dead. Spoilers below.
How the show reveals it
Marshals opens with Kayce waking from a nightmare — a military flashback in which he's screaming Monica's name. He's alone in bed. Over the course of the first episode, it becomes clear that Monica has already died before the show begins. Kayce visits her grave and tells her, "The best part of me died with you."
How she died
The premiere doesn't dwell on specifics, but the Hollywood Reporter confirmed the details: Monica died of cancer caused by toxic contamination levels on the Broken Rock Reservation. Her death occurs between the Yellowstone finale and the start of Marshals.
Why they killed her off
Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica for 53 episodes of Yellowstone, does not appear in Marshals and was not listed in any cast announcements. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained that Kayce needed something devastating enough to tear him away from the peaceful ranch life he chose at the end of Yellowstone and push him back toward violence and duty. Monica's death provides that catalyst.
The decision was controversial. Monica was a polarizing character among Yellowstone fans — some found her compelling, others blamed her for slowing down Kayce's storyline. Either way, her off-screen death echoed the franchise 's pattern: John Dutton himself was also killed off-screen between seasons.
Kayce now raises teenage son Tate (Brecken Merrill) alone while joining an elite U.S. Marshals unit alongside his old military contact Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green).
