Psychedelic action films, creepy horror tales, and wild road movies.

The Surfer, starring Nicolas Cage as a man who goes to war with an Australian surf gang, was recently released. In light of this, we decided to highlight other notable roles by one of the most daring actors of our generation.

1. Mandy, 2018

Lumberjack Red and his girlfriend, Mandy, live a quiet life in a cabin in the middle of the forest. Suddenly, however, members of a religious cult led by the creepy Jeremiah appear near their house. They kidnap Mandy, prompting Red to set off in pursuit of revenge.

At some point in his career, Nicolas Cage found himself on the outskirts of Hollywood. His renaissance began with Mandy, a film that showcased the actor's talents.

In Panos Cosmatos's psychedelic thriller, Cage's character chops his enemies with a chainsaw and kills them in other inventive ways, instead of saying unnecessary words.

2. Wild at Heart, 1990

After getting out of prison, Sailor goes straight to see Lula, his beloved. Together, they decide to escape their hometown and go as far away as possible. However, Lula's mother, Marietta, strongly opposes this plan. She hires private detectives and a pack of killers to chase the lovers.

David Lynch's surreal road movie is a hymn to youth and love. It tells the story of a passionate couple trying to hide from the cruel world, but problems constantly arise.

The duo of Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern is the beating heart of the film. Both actors play people stuck in fantasies who refuse to accept the imposed rules.

3. Longlegs, 2024

FBI agent Lee Harker has paranormal abilities that help her catch criminals. However, even she is unable to solve one case involving a strange series of brutal crimes that have been occurring for decades. In these crimes, fathers kill all their relatives and then commit suicide.

During the investigation, Harker gets on the trail of an elusive man nicknamed Longlegs. However, she doesn't know exactly how he is connected to the murders.

Osgood Perkins's film would not have been half as effective without the perfect casting of Longlegs, played by Cage. The actor, changed beyond recognition, is truly terrifying.

4. Vampire's Kiss, 1988

Peter Loew is a bored literary agent from New York whose life has been uneventful for a long time. One day, when he brings a girl home, a bat flies into his room.

While fighting with it, he suddenly becomes aroused. Soon after, another girlfriend bites him. From that day on, Peter finds it increasingly difficult to be in the sun and to live without human blood.

In a sense, Vampire's Kiss was ahead of the 1990s fashion for films about yuppies who invent their own problems out of boredom. Fight Club and American Psycho are examples of this trend.
