Mahershala Ali Calls Out Marvel After Blade Is Shelved
Mahershala Ali has addressed the cancelled Blade reboot — and why pivoting the next film became creative redemption.
In a new GQ interview published July 31, 2026 , Mahershala Ali didn’t dance around it: Marvel ’s long-gestating vampire-hunter movie isn’t happening on his watch. He said the studio had him signed and the resources to make it, but chose not to move forward.
“Again, you (Marvel) had me under contract; they have billions of dollars; if they wanted to do the movie, we would've done the movie. So we're not doing the movie.”
Ali added that he’s done fielding inquiries about the stalled reboot, nudging any remaining questions back to the studio.
“But I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them (Marvel). They didn't want to do it, so they should answer that question.”

From reboot to original drama
Out of the rubble of that start-and-stop process came a different path. After leaving the Marvel project, director Bassam Tariq wrote an original drama titled Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother and circled back to Ali. The detour cleared the way for the two to team up on an independent film born outside franchise machinery.
Ali calls the shift part of a bigger philosophy about choosing work that genuinely fits. Looking back on his career, the two-time Oscar winner said he trusts what lands with him and lets go of what doesn’t.
“No offense to them. I’ve been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not.”
And on the new collaboration with Tariq, Ali said it lines up with where he wants to put his energy next.
“‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’ feels very much in alignment with the type of work I want to be known for.”
