Lili Reinhart wants a queer romance after The Love Hypothesis — are studios too afraid?
A star you know already has their next romance teed up—if studios bite.
In a new chat with Hits Radio, Lili Reinhart said she’s been quietly developing a film based on a queer vampire novella — and running into brick walls while trying to get it made. The Riverdale alum didn’t mince words about the response she’s heard so far from would‑be backers.
“People are too afraid to make that. So, if you work at a studio and are watching this video, I don’t know why you wouldn’t make that in this day and age.”
Reinhart didn’t share the title she’s pursuing, only that it’s a lesbian vampire romance she’s eager to sink her teeth into. For now, there’s no studio attached.
Carmilla chatter
Fans quickly started guessing in the interview ’s comments, with many pointing to Carmilla, the 1872 novella by Irish writer J. Sheridan Le Fanu about a young woman stalked by a mysterious female vampire. Reinhart hasn’t confirmed the pick, but the classic has long been a go‑to for queer gothic adaptations.
Fresh off The Love Hypothesis
Reinhart just led and executive produced the book-to-screen romance The Love Hypothesis, which gave her a front‑row seat to the pressure cooker of adapting a fan‑favorite. Speaking to India Today, she acknowledged the nerves that come with stepping into a character readers already love.
“Some people just aren’t going to love your specific interpretation, and that’s okay. I think a lot of actors probably don’t take the role sometimes because they’re afraid of the backlash.”
She added that excitement won out this time, and as an EP she “definitely” gave notes on the script — working with the team for roughly a year before cameras rolled. Now that the film is out, response has been mixed: some viewers feel the adaptation does right by the novel, while others have pushed back on changes and the script’s choices.
As for the vampire project, Reinhart says she’s still looking for a partner to get it out of development and into production. No title, cast, or timeline has been announced.
