Kellie Pickler Breaks Silence With First Interview Since Her Husband’s Death
Two decades after her American Idol audition, Kellie Pickler, 39, reflects on how drastically life has changed — and admits the journey has surprised her at every turn — in a candid May 6 conversation on the American Idol Official Podcast with host Danielle Fishel.
Kellie Pickler just stepped back onto the American Idol stage and, for the first time in a long while, sat down to talk about where life has taken her since that first audition more than 20 years ago. It was equal parts full-circle moment and gut punch of perspective.
The full-circle return
On May 4, Pickler, 39, returned to Idol to duet with season 24 contestant Hannah Harper on Martina McBride's 'A Broken Wing' — the same song Pickler used for her season 5 audition back in 2006. That performance also marked her first time performing since the death of her husband, songwriter-producer Kyle Jacobs, in February 2023.
Then the conversation
Two days later, she joined host Danielle Fishel, 45, on the May 6 episode of the 'American Idol Official Podcast.' Pickler was open about how surreal the passage of time feels when your early 20s played out on national TV: she said she was honestly surprised by everything that unfolded after Idol and grateful for it, noting that a lot of viewers basically watched her grow up on screen.
'It is a family here. It is an Idol family, and once you are a part of it, it is forever.'
That family vibe is not just a talking point for her — she pointed out that every time she comes back, it feels like picking up right where she left off, and a surprising number of crew from her 2006 season are still there.
Why this duet happened
Pickler said the whole thing kicked off when her sister reached out after Harper's audition. From there, the pairing came together naturally. Working with Harper, she said, was a joy — she called the newly minted finalist a total sweetheart with real talent. And yes, she could not say no to coming back to the Idol stage in Hollywood.
First interview since an unimaginable loss
This podcast appearance was Pickler's first interview since Jacobs died at 49. A spokesperson for the Davidson County Medical Examiner later confirmed to E! News that his death was ruled a suicide. A toxicology report found no drugs in his system. In the months since, Pickler has largely stayed off social media and out of the spotlight.
Harper's win and what comes next
Harper, 25, went on to be crowned the season's winner on Monday, May 11, picking up a recording contract and a substantial cash prize. Pickler, who finished in the Top 6 on her season, sounded confident that Harper — and the rest of this year's finalists — have a long-term home base with the Idol community. In classic Kellie fashion, she joked that Idol is basically the only family reunion you actually want to attend, since there are no literal relatives to argue with.
