Katie Ginella Blasts Alleged RHOC Japan Trip, Says It Left Her Broken
After alleging racist treatment within the franchise, Real Housewives of Orange County alum Katie Ginella says news the show is reportedly planning a cast trip to Japan left her in tears — and asking if she’s overreacting.
If you missed it over the weekend: former RHOC cast member Katie Ginella saw footage of the season 20 ladies in Tokyo and absolutely lost it — not for clout, but because of what the trip represents to her. Given what she says she went through on the show, yeah, I get why this one hit a nerve.
The Tokyo trip that set her off
Katie, 41, posted a TikTok on Saturday, April 25, saying she had just learned the 'Real Housewives of Orange County' cast confirmed a trip to Japan. In viral clips, the season 20 crew — including returning OG Vicki Gunvalson — were filmed at Shibuya Crossing with cameras rolling, decked out in ruffled skirts, loud prints, and candy-colored wigs. Translation: big Harajuku cosplay energy.
'I can't for the life of me figure out why they would go to a country where they have zero respect for Asian culture, most of them, not all of them.'
Neither Bravo nor the cast have said anything publicly about the trip or Katie's reaction. Us Weekly says it reached out to the network for comment.
Why this stings for Katie
Katie held an orange — meaning full-time Housewife — in seasons 18 and 19, and announced in January she would not be back for season 20. She is the first Asian-American Housewife on RHOC, and she says that when she tried to bring Asian culture into the show, it did not go well.
According to Katie, castmates brushed her off with versions of 'no one cares about race except you' and made fun of hotpot — specifically the meats and dishes — while she was trying to introduce something meaningful to her. She also says she had floated the idea of taking a trip to Korea, possibly with the group, to explore her heritage. Katie was adopted as a child and wanted to connect those dots on camera.
So when she saw the season 20 crew jetting to Japan, that was the gut punch. In her words, it was not about wanting to be on that plane with them — it was about what the choice signaled: respect, inclusion, and a space that she feels she (and, more broadly, any minority on a cast like this) deserved but did not get.
What we know right now
- Saturday, April 25: Katie posts a TikTok reacting to RHOC filming in Tokyo and questions why the show would go to Japan given her experiences.
- Same day: Viral social clips show the season 20 cast at Shibuya Crossing in Harajuku-style looks; cameras are visible. Vicki Gunvalson appears to be part of the group for season 20.
- Katie says past attempts to share Asian culture on the show were dismissed or mocked, and that she once suggested a Korea trip tied to her adoption and heritage.
- She left after season 19; she announced in January she would not return for season 20.
- Bravo and the cast have not addressed the Tokyo trip or Katie's comments; Us Weekly has asked the network for a statement.
- For context: the season 19 reunion lineup included mainstays like Tamra Judge, and Gretchen Rossi showed up as well.
Where Katie stands now
Katie says she is not holding a grudge about her exit and that life is quieter and better post-RHOC. Still, seeing the Japan trip news wrecked her for a minute. The subtext here is not subtle: if the show wanted to meaningfully engage with Asian culture, it had a built-in way to do it while she was there. Choosing to do it after she left — and doing it with wigs and ruffles — is exactly the kind of move that makes her feel shut out.
