Justice League’s CGI team, avert your eyes: Henry Cavill’s mustache makes a comeback
Henry Cavill is getting the last laugh about that infamous upper lip — and he’s doing it with a new project you probably didn’t see coming.
In a new three-part video series released by Google on Nov. 4, Henry Cavill sits down with an HP Googlebook 14 and builds a retro 16‑bit game called Mustache Protocol—a send-up in which players battle rogue CGI artists hellbent on erasing every mustache on Earth. It ’s tongue‑in‑cheek and unmistakably personal: the mission is to save the ’stache.
The videos track Cavill as he sketches a hero, experiments with meme-y superpowers, and even helps with the soundtrack. In the first installment, he tests out different mustache styles and briefly toys with an absurdly over-armed medieval warrior before pivoting to something more strategic—because defending facial hair, apparently, calls for tactics.
From CGI lip to 16-bit
This whole bit springs from the infamous Justice League reshoots in 2017, when Cavill couldn’t shave his Mission: Impossible – Fallout mustache and the studio digitally erased it. The uncanny upper lip became a running joke online and a piece of Hollywood lore; Mustache Protocol reads like his playful answer nearly a decade later.
Google’s rollout frames the game as a quick-build project using its in-house tools: Cavill demos Antigravity to turn written prompts into playable mechanics, taps Rambler to refine ideas, and uses Magic Pointer to shape his pixel hero. A “Continue On” feature lets him swap between an Android phone and the laptop mid-build.
Google unveiled Mustache Protocol on Nov. 4 in a three-part video series.
Next up: Highlander
On the film side, Cavill is leading Highlander, director Chad Stahelski’s reboot of the 1986 fantasy classic. He plays Connor MacLeod, a Scottish swordsman born in 1518 who can’t be killed by ordinary means and spends centuries dueling other immortals for a mysterious prize.
