Jessica Biel opens up about her lifelong admiration for Dirty Dancing, a film she’s watched over 80 times, and how it shaped her career and generation.

Jessica Biel’s rise to fame happened early, making her a household name among her peers. Yet, even with her own star power, she couldn’t help but feel awe when she finally met the leading man from one of her most cherished childhood films. For Biel and many actors of her era, the biggest names from the 1980s seemed almost untouchable, their mystique heightened by a time when celebrity culture wasn’t as in-your-face as it is now. Back then, movie stars mostly lived on the silver screen, rarely stepping into the public eye, which only added to their legendary status.

Among all the stars she admired, Patrick Swayze stood out the most. Swayze, a true icon of the ‘80s, left a lasting impression with a string of unforgettable roles, from Point Break to Road House and Red Dawn. But for Biel, it was his performance in Dirty Dancing that truly captured her heart.

“He is beloved by everyone, including me,”

Biel shared.

“I grew up watching Dirty Dancing. I watched it every day after school. Every day. I’ve seen it probably 80 times or more, no joke.”

Dirty Dancing’s Lasting Impact

It’s rare for someone to watch a movie so many times, but Dirty Dancing was no ordinary film. It broke new ground by tackling serious issues like women’s rights and social class, all while launching a wave of dance movies that would dominate the next decade. Without its influence, it’s hard to imagine movies like Step Up, Center Stage, or Save the Last Dance ever coming to life.

Biel’s childhood dream came full circle when she landed a role opposite Swayze in Powder Blue, a drama that also featured Ray Liotta and Forest Whitaker. Although it turned out to be Swayze’s final film before his untimely passing, Biel only had fond memories of working with him.

“Patrick was wonderful and full of energy,”

she recalled.

“He was involved in the process and literally coming to the set even when he wasn’t even working and saying, ‘Here’s my idea for that scene tomorrow.’”

Career Shifts and Television Success

While Powder Blue didn’t win over critics, it marked a turning point for Biel. After a few high-profile Hollywood projects that didn’t quite hit the mark, she shifted her focus to smaller, independent films where she could show more depth and vulnerability. It was on television that Biel truly found her stride, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her role in The Sinner.

Biel isn’t alone in her obsession with Dirty Dancing. The film’s soundtrack became one of the best-selling of all time, and it even won an Oscar for Best Original Song. Its legacy inspired a prequel, a stage musical, several reality competition shows, and an upcoming sequel featuring Jennifer Grey. Still, Swayze’s unforgettable performance in the original remains unmatched, casting a long shadow over any new adaptation.
