Jamie Foxx feared Halle Berry joke cancellation like Kevin Hart: “people became too sensitive”
Jamie Foxx says today’s “sensitive” audiences pushed him to cut material, even as he readies a Hulu special and the action thriller Deadlocked.
In a new chat with The Hollywood Reporter about his stand-up special Take Care of Yourself heading to Hulu , Jamie Foxx said he cut pieces of a planned Halle Berry bit after watching how viewers reacted to Netflix ’s Roast of Kevin Hart — particularly the online blowback to Tony Hinchcliffe’s George Floyd joke.
“Because people became too sensitive,”
Foxx told the outlet he personally disliked Hinchcliffe’s George Floyd line and understood why audiences bristled. He didn’t want a single moment to drown out the rest of his hour, so he left some ideas on the cutting-room floor rather than risk the entire special getting consumed by one controversy.
One trimmed section, he explained, grew out of seeing his generation age in public — from Deion Sanders pitching Depends to Halle Berry speaking candidly about menopause. The joke ultimately landed on Foxx himself: those reminders had him embracing his “Triple OG” era, with aging as the punchline, not Berry.
Next up: Deadlocked
Beyond stand-up, Foxx is headed to Victoria, Australia, to film Deadlocked for Amazon MGM Studios. Shooting is underway around Melbourne, Docklands and Port Melbourne, with local streets doubling for New York City. The action thriller is directed by Nikhil Bhat (Kill) and is expected to stream globally on Prime Video ; a release date hasn’t been announced.
Foxx plays a grieving former Marine called to jury duty when a high-profile trial explodes into a hostage situation. The defendant’s daughter seizes the courthouse in a bid to free her father, forcing Foxx’s character to fall back on his military training.
