James Gunn has set the record straight about the highly anticipated Dynamic Duo animated film, confirming it will not be altered to fit into the DC Universe. The movie, spotlighting Dick Grayson and Jason Todd as Robin, is on track for a June 30, 2028 release.

James Gunn has officially addressed speculation surrounding the upcoming Dynamic Duo animated feature, making it clear that the project is moving forward as planned and will not be reworked to fit into the broader DC Universe. When a fan reached out on Threads to ask about the film ’s progress, Gunn responded,

“Really, really well.”

Another user questioned whether the script was being rewritten to tie into the DCU, to which Gunn simply replied,

“Nope.”

Dynamic Duo is being helmed by Arthur Mintz, CEO of Swaybox, with a screenplay penned by Matthew Aldrich, known for his work on Coco. Gunn and Matt Reeves, director of The Batman, are both attached as producers. Despite Reeves’ involvement, there’s no indication that this animated project will connect to The Batman universe or any other existing DC film continuity.

First announced in 2024, the film is described as an innovative blend of animation, puppetry, and CGI. The story centers on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, both of whom have taken up the mantle of Robin in the comics. The narrative will explore their dynamic as young partners, delving into their relationship during their formative years as Batman’s sidekicks. This marks the first animated release from DC Studios under Gunn’s leadership.

Dynamic Duo is currently slated to hit theaters on June 30, 2028. In the meantime, DC fans can look forward to other major releases, including Supergirl in June 2026 and The Batman 2, which is scheduled for October 1, 2027. Additionally, a live-action Batman film, The Brave and the Bold, is expected to arrive no earlier than 2028.
